I'm Emma, your go-to coach and mentor for freelancers. π Author, ADHDer, podcaster & tech geek from Berkshire. β¬οΈ Link for goodies! ILM 7 qualified
Hello, and welcome! I'm not great at small talk. But I really like bullet points. So hereβs an intro in bullet points! ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πI'm Emma Cossey, coach for freelancers. Iβve been freelance since 2009, in social media, blogging, editorial, training and copywriting, and coaching since 2015. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πIntrovert. A lot of the business tips I share are introvert-friendly, no pushy hard sales round here! ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πDiagnosed with ADHD (inattentive) in 2022, at the age of 36. I started meds in August 2022 and OMG was I living life in hard mode before. The gift of living with it for so long, unknowingly, is that Iβve come up with a LOT of techniques and hacks to make life easier, whether youβre neurotypical or neurodivergent. Plus, the great thing about making things neurodivergent-friendly, is that it makes it more accessible for everyone.ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π Massive fan of apps, tools and workflows that make life easier (and leave less room for human error!). Sure, my husband physically recoils when he sees how many notifications I have on my phone, but it helps me get stuff done. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π Massive basic bitch when it comes to autumn. Has an excessive collection of knitted pumpkins. Happiest when the weather is right for cardigans and tights. In the summer you'll find me with all of the rest of the gingers, with an inch deep layer of suncream on, muttering about wasps and sweating. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
πI live in Bracknell with my husband Pete, and our son Oscar. You can usually find us on the Nintendo Switch, playing Uno or watching Taskmaster. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
π Kindness is a huge value for me. Unless it comes to wasps. Or clients who mess freelancers around on purpose. ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Tell me about you! ββββββββ

Did you know I have a podcast, The Freelancerβs Teabreak ? I mean, Iβve been blathering on about it since 2015 (I think it might even be a year older than that, thereβs a handful of episodes somewhere.) ββββββββ
ββββββββ
I bloody love podcasts, they feel like such a life cheat. I can learn stuff while I'm doing other stuff! It makes loading the dishwasher more interesting! ββββββββ
ββββββββ
Anyway, back to The Freelancer's Teabreak. Each episode is usually 5-10 minutes long, aside from some of the interviews, so theyβre perfect for listening to while the kettle boils for your cuppa. Just search for The Freelancerβs Teabreak on Spotify, iTunes or Youtube.ββββββββ

Something I have been asked several times if can you claim universal credit if you freelance. And the answer is yes.
This carousel will guide you through what that looks like and how you can go about it. Do remember this carousel was right at the time of writing it, but rules do change, so make sure to double check.

I think at some time or other we have all had a client like this.
βCan you justβ¦ could you pick that up, or squeeze that in for me? It wonβt take more than a minuteβ. But it probably will. And we all deserve to be paid for our time and expertise. I know asking to be paid βfor that quick jobβ might feel petty, but it all stacks up.
Boundaries are so important with clients, and the sooner you put them in, the easier the relationship will be. A simple βyes I can pick that up, that will cost Β£xβ solves the problem and after the first time you do it, it will get easier.. I promise.
Save this for future reference for the next time this happens.

Thereβs so much all over social media about βbeatingβ imposter syndrome.
But I donβt think you can beat it. In fact, I donβt think youβre supposed to. I think youβre supposed to work with it.
Imposter syndrome is just there to protect you, even if it is often a bit too overprotective.
The best way to deal with imposter syndrome is to talk to it, treat it like an overprotective parent who has your best interests at heart, but doesnβt quite know what theyβre talking about.
Want some more advice on dealing with imposter syndrome? Head over to the link in bio for my free download or comment below and I will send you the details.

One of the things I talk a lot about with my clients is keeping track of where your customers and clients come from. Understanding where your leads come from and what drives sales helps you understand where to invest and spend your time.
It doesnβt have to be sophisticated, maybe just a line on a spreadsheet so you know or on a Notion board, but understanding this can help you to make decisions. In fact, if you use a scheduling tool (like I use @dubsado ), it can be a question in your discovery call form.
Here are the three places I found clients last month, do you know where you found yours?

When it comes to running your own business, there is no one size fits all. I am very much all about doing what is right for your business and your lifestyle. Here are a few things I stopped normalising in my business and that have been a game-changer for me.

Eurgh.
Six-figure successβ¦ itβs shared as the ultimate freelancer success on social media isnβt it? And if thatβs what you wantβ¦ great!
(But I would urge you to think, what would you spend it on? Because if you just want to hit six figures for the sake of saying it, it might not feel quite as satisfying as you think. Not least because six figures income is not the same as six figures profit).
But itβs far from the only measure of success. Many freelancers wonβt, or donβt want to achieve that. Because their goal is something else entirely. Maybe itβs flexible working, maybe itβs travel, maybe itβs working with dream clients. Maybe itβs earning enough to pay the bills, have a lovely little life and time to live it.
Thatβs the thing about being freelance, you can determine what success looks like. And itβs totally ok if it looks different to everyone else. Just donβt feel like youβre failing if six figures isnβt it.

Lead magnets have long been a buzzword in the freelance and marketing industry. Everyone was told they needed one, we all created our beautiful PDFs and set up our automations. But the thing is⦠do they even work? Or did they get lost in the downloads graveyard?
In this carousel, Iβve got some questions for you to ask yourself to see if you need to update, or even get rid of, yours!

I love having fun on my social media, just donβt ask me to lip sync or clap in time to the music, because we might be here for a week π€£ or minimum 13 tries!
Whatβs your social media weakness?

Tag a freelancer who would is your ride or d1e. The person you can call on anytime and you know they will help you whatever the emergency. The one who you know would help you hide that body (or correct the terrible mistake youβve made)
