I started this painting so that I could take part in the art contest being held by @studioslew
#selfportraitstilllife 🥳 🎉 yippee
But, at this stage it's become something more significant to me than a chance at winning.
As it had to be a self portrait, I knew immediately it would be dishonest and inauthentic to paint something that showed anything besides struggle.
Those closest to me will know the last few months have been incredibly difficult for me, for many reasons. I will not share all these reasons just to explain the contents of the image, because I'm not comfortable doing that.
What I will acknowledge is that I quit smoking, as represented in my painting by the little plastic filter strip. It is the one positive thing shown within the artwork, though still very much a part of the struggle.
I'm not sure how closely I followed the instructions of this contest in the end, but I feel this painting is exactly the way that it needed to be. One friend has described it as a diary entry in painted form, and I think that is exactly right.
I'm glad to have painted myself like this. Now, onto the next project.
