Have you attempted casting siblings before?
In December of 2011, this was my “office” while casting background for “The Watch.” A cold, hard garage floor while filming happened in the kitchen, a pile of paperwork, and a determination to figure it out.
To say I was out of my depth is an understatement. My days (and nights) consisted of booking background talent for the next morning, processing payments, building an entire background actor database from scratch, and supervising on-set talent.
It was grueling. I lost count of how many times I caught myself falling asleep at the wheel driving to set. When we were short on bodies, I’d throw myself into the scene just to fill the frame.
Through it all, I was in love with being involved in a creative endeavor: selecting unique faces, being “Mama Bear” to the background talent, and bonding over the hustle and bustle of being on set with a hard-working crew. Looking back, I’m so grateful for the trials that built the foundation for where I am today.
At HollyShorts Kickoff Summit panel titled “Working with Casting Directors (Shorts and Beyond),” casting director Emily Cook @emilycookcasting and writer-director John Michael Riva Jr. @mikeyrivajr (Fontana) led a hands-on workshop about the art and strategy of casting.
From prepping for your first casting session to choosing actors for tone and authenticity, they showed how casting decisions can also become powerful tools for financing, budgeting, and building industry connections.
