Felt compelled, might delete later 😹 I can’t say it loudly enough : the removal of minor inconvenience in modern society is ruining our ability to behave within it.
When we’re annoyed, inconvenienced, made to wait, presented with unideal circumstances we’re actually being asked to problem solve, consider, to stick with, & to think critically; we’re asked to engage with time; to deal with rather than numb out, react, & move on.
Americans have been dissociated from the real experience of time. We’ve asked it to both collapse & expand to fit our social media habits & a never ending work day. The low-grade anxiety created from not engaging in time in a real way keeps us out of our own lives.
Our gatherings are a veneer of what a gathering is - as long as there’s a scrawly neon sign we can post on instagram with our besties, we can say we gathered, protested, drank, & were merry. I want to know if we were really ever there? Or when we were there, were we just doing what we thought we were supposed to do & moving on?
Modern architecture, cuisine, music, fashion trends look & feel the same - flashy, cheap, clean, & with enough space for the viewer to wonder about where they came from, fit themselves in, & think they need to spend more to belong. Our environments lack personal stories. Lack detail, commitment, thought, & care in construction. Lack the choices of humans enjoying what they’re doing & sharing through creating.
Our arts lack the artist. People are performing for their fears. We see people for what they can offer us rather than who they are & how we can connect.
Some things helping me to engage with time & stay in the world I want to be in : Do your own dishes. Turn your phone off. Dance. Engage in eye contact. Make something. Go for a walk. Wait in line. Call the IRS. Talk to someone who scares you. Read on paper for 15 minutes longer than you want to. Listen to your brain scream & ask why. Cook even if you suck at it. Turn off spell check. Fix something you broke instead of buying a replacement. Gather with no purpose other than gathering. Ask for help. Choose boredom.
Wabi-Sabi is our existence.
Celebrating the cracks is living.

We had the honor of welcoming @emilluh on Tuesday for a special ballet workshop, diving into tendus, lines, port de bras, length, allongé, turns, and balance—refining the details that elevate everything we do. 🫶

📣 Big news from our dance family 💖
📣 Lovely dancers and families - as you know, PAW has always been a hub for dance, community, and excellence. Since 1996 we have valued individual focus, quality over quantity, and the creation of great things by great people. Over the last couple of years we have experienced significant financial strain under the stress of the economy and unforeseen circumstances. To provide the same quality we have always held as a tenant of dance education and that we are known for, at this time we need to downsize.
We are thrilled to announce that through the kindness and flexibility of our landlords, we will continue to teach and create space for artists in a new location - right next door in the former fish store! This studio is a little smaller than our current Studio A and will have the same great floors, better storage, an indoor space for dancers, and an outdoor lounge for dancers and parents to wait before and after classes.
In a new space, PAW can continue to provide a safe haven for artists and arts appreciators in San Diego. Removing the financial strain the studio is currently under will allow us to perform in larger theaters again, work on detail in technique, bond our community, support artists with better infrastructure, and minimize the time spent in rehearsals. We are also looking forward to growing our community through increased administrative capacity.
Our studio schedule will largely remain the same. Please note the new schedule is not finalized! We are still trying to make sure it will work for our teachers and students, incorporate Hip Hop, and add new adult classes.
We are all looking forward to moving forward strong, better, and more well connected and being able to provide the same quality instruction and space for community we always have. We’re looking forward to doing it with all of you! We do not have a target date as of yet but the move will not be far off. If you have some hands, we’d love the help moving forward!
Please reach out with any questions or concerns!
Yours,
Emily Miller
