We are pleased to announce that PAW is now representing Emil Walde @emil_walde . He had his first solo exhibition “Appendage” at our Karlsruhe location at the end of 2025. Currently, two of his works are included in the group show “Profusion Antagonist Wishlist”.
We are also thrilled to share that Emil will be participating in @manifestabiennial this year, where a new commission will be presented at Kulturkirche Liebfrauen in Duisburg, curated by Henry Meyric Hughes and Michael Kurtz @michaelkurtz . Manifesta 16 will take place in twelve churches across four cities in the Ruhr Area from June 21 to October 4, 2026.
Emil Walde (b. 1991, Munich) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Franka Hörnschemeyer and Gregor Schneider. Since his studies, he has exhibited in numerous institutions and galleries. In 2024, he developed a memorial for the city of Mülheim commemorating the victims of National Socialism.
Walde’s practice engages with site-specific materials and situations. By appropriating existing materials and their physical properties, his work sharpens the perception of the surrounding environment, questioning seemingly self-evident assumptions and opening up new conceptual possibilities. This interaction with the given context forms a central aspect of his artistic approach.

Beauty Box, 2021
perforated sheet metal, plexiglass, prosthesis, wood, lacquer
40 x 30 x 17 cm
„In „Beauty Box“, Walde addresses the idea of the prosthesis – as an aid that embodies both visibility and invisibility. The prosthesis is installed within a box, protected yet exposed, while a metallic screen guides the viewer’s gaze and enforces a deliberate, almost intimate act of looking. Here, the seemingly functional becomes a poetic object of contemplation – a reflection on vulnerability, beauty, and identity.“

Unicorn, 2024
galvanized steel, wire ropes
approx. 200 cm length, dimensions variable
„The work Unicorn also plays with transformation and shifting meaning. From simple clamping hooks, Walde forms a monumental spine whose number of “vertebrae” corresponds to that of the human backbone. Suspended freely in space, the sculpture oscillates between organic association and technical coldness – a fossil relic and a cybernetic backbone at once. The banal connecting element becomes a metaphor for strain, stability, and fragility, for a metallic spine that appears both dystopian and deeply human.“

Unicorn, 2024, galvanized steel, wire ropes, 2m
UNICORN
Suspended between the central space and a corner, Emil Walde’s galvanized steel sculpture rises into the air, its oversized, spine-like form held in place by wire ropes. The taut cables and industrial materiality suggest a precarious balance, while the sculpture’s placement creates a visual and conceptual dialogue with both Kempf’s organic forms and Föllenz’s fragmented figures. This dynamic interplay invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance inherent in both physical and metaphorical structures.
