April in Los Angeles + The Beach Boys — “I Get Around”
The Notes:
April was a busy one. My mom was visiting from Australia, so we spent the month showing her the many corners of LA.
The Map:
LACMA, The La Brea Tar Pits, Lake Shrine, Culver City, Venice, Marina Del Rey, Walmart, the local Goodwill, and Lumi’s 2nd birthday at Marine Park, Santa Monica. These were just some of the places we took her.
The Soundtrack:
“I Get Around” by The Beach Boys instantly popped into my head when I was putting together these clips. Turns out it was actually written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love based on their real-life experiences driving “up and down the same old strip” in Hawthorne and across LA. It felt like the only right choice for a month spent constantly on the move.

The La Brea Tar Pits + Beethoven’s 5th: A staggering symphony in four movements; mostly through the tar. 🎻
There’s a certain “low-level doom” that bubbles up when I try to imagine just how far the asphalt extends—and how many ancient beasts remain suspended in time, right beneath our feet here.
It’s a primal feeling; something instinctually familiar, yet terrifying. I find that same resonance in Beethoven’s masterpiece: the weight of history, the persistence of fate, and the heavy drama of the sticky stuff of life. 🦴

I took Paul Simon’s advice this week-took a breath to show my mom around L.A. while she was visiting from Australia.
I’m calling these life posts “Between the Songs”—a little glimpse into the life moments that happen when the instruments are put away (for a minute).
Even when I’m not writing, I can’t help but see life through lyrics. I usually have some sort of present-moment soundtrack playing in my head. At LACMA it was “59th Street Bridge Song.” Hello lamppost!💡
Back to the music soon. For now, we’re just feelin’ groovy.
