We’ve officially secured our Emerald Arch base in the Ecuadorian Amazon! We are so excited to share that we are officially operating out of a plot of Amazon rainforest, the first of many plots on Emerald Arch’s radar. We have learned a tremendous amount within the last few months and are excited to utilize this knowledge in our future land purchases! 🍃

How cute is the Amazon Kingfisher? These guys are indicator species, which means that their presence indicates a healthy river ecosystem! They like to plunge into the water to eat fish and crustaceans 🦀 #birds #conservation #amazonrainforest

Happy Mother's day! Motherhood is an essential part of survival for many animals around the world, including us humans. Without our mothers, we would be lost and hungry. Take some time to celebrate the Moms in your life today! #happymothersday #conservation

Spix's night monkey 'Aotus vociferans' These are a unique and interesting nocturnal, new world monkey. Did you know they scratch like this because it helps with stress and anxiety? It also rids them of fleas and ticks but its a coping mechanism for situations that are uncomfortable! Also... like humans they give birth to 1 baby but can have twins, however, whats different about these is the males are the primary caregiver. Only letting them go when they need feeding! @browningtrailcams showing us the wonder of the canopy at @emerald.arch #Cameratrap #education #conservation #nightmonkey #EmeraldArch

Pseudoeryx plicatilis - South American pond snake The highlight of our recent surveys was finding this incredibly rare aquatic snake. In Ecuador, South American Pond Snakes are recorded no more than once every few years at any given locality, so for us to find one on this trip was a dream come true! The individual was photographed for the Reptiles of Ecuador book and released shortly after! Who had heard of this snake before now?

Last night we started a routine night hike at Emerald Arch which turned into an emotional night for us all. On our way out, on a section of trail we've passed almost every night for the past couple weeks, Truman spotted a "weird snake" which Harry stepped right over. We all had a collective moment of shock and joy upon realizing we had just confirmed the presence of one of the most enigmatic species of snake in the Amazon Rainforest, the Amazonian Toad-Headed Viper. This is a species our group had discussed several times this trip as to whether or not it may be present on the property. Sightings of this species are extremely rare throughout their range so confirming their presence felt like an impossible task. But the impossible becomes possible here at Emerald Arch. We have 2 night-hikes left for this visit, let's see what we can make of them!!!
