This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, the theme is Take Action, and that's exactly what Lee did on his sailing adventure last summer.
Like so many young people, life didnât just return to normal after Leeâs treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma. He has lived with ongoing fatigue, sleep difficulties and social anxiety since. But with a little encouragement, he decided to try something completely new and join a sailing adventure.
Lee shared why that step mattered to him: đŁâA lot of people donât want cancer to define them. Youâre still a young person, youâve still got your life ahead. You donât want to be seen as a cancer patient, you want to be seen as one of the young people just out there living your life.
âThe thing about anxiety is the less you fight it, the stronger it grows. Something like this builds your confidence, gets you in the mindset to try new things. Itâs a good push to try and get out of a rut. I see a big improvement already.â
If you or someone you know could benefit from something like this, now is the time to take that first step and sign up via the Linkin.bio to join us this summer. âľ
With just over a week to go until our first adventure sets sail next Saturday, a brilliant team of volunteers have been hard at work getting our boats ready to welcome young people back onboard. âľ
A huge thank you to Cowes Boatyard for lifting the boats so they could receive a full maintenance treatment and all the important safety checks ahead of the season. A shout-out to the River Yar Boatyard for carrying out their annual service, and to our friends at @uksasailing for letting us use their pontoons while preparations have been underway.â
And of course, the biggest THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers and @sailwithamy for giving their time, energy, and care to make all of this possible.
The boats are now ready⌠the countdown is on⌠let the adventures begin! đ
Take a look at our Brighter Futures Sailing Day at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes! âľď¸
Today we welcomed professional sailors, charity partners, volunteers and young people whoâve been part of our community for a special fundraising event.â¨
The day started with a panel - huge thanks to Tom, Ivans, Amelia and Edward for sharing their stories so openly with our guests.
It was a breezy one out there but that didnât stop us getting out on the water for an exhilarating sail before warming up in the pavilion over a BBQ and great company.
Days like this remind us how important it is to share the difference our adventures make. The more people who understand the impact, the more young people we can be there for when they need support to look beyond cancer. đ
Today weâre celebrating the incredible nurses who support young people living through and beyond cancer. They deserve more than just one day of recognition. Weâre so grateful for everything they do, not just on #InternationalNursesDay but always. đ
From hospital wards to our partnerships with @teenage_cancer and @younglivesvscancer nurses play such an important role in helping young people find their way to our adventures and feel confident enough to take that first step.
Some, like Jo, go even further. Since 2014, after spotting one of our posters while working at @greatormondst sheâs been encouraging young people to join us on the water. Alongside supporting young people in hospital, she also volunteers on our sailing adventures, helping young people and their families feel excited for whatâs ahead.
She describes the experiences as âgenuinely like magicâ and says they give her the chance to see a completely different side of the young people she cares for, a side beyond treatment.
To every nurse who shares our work, encourages young people to join us and helps them believe in a future beyond cancer, THANK YOU. â¨
From the powerhouse vocals of Jessie J, to the timeless brilliance of Tom Jones, and the unmistakable groove of Nile Rodgers & CHIC⌠@carfestevent is a proper music loverâs dream. đś
Weâre so excited for this yearâs line-up and grateful to be part of such an amazing festival, but now we want to know⌠who are YOU most excited to see? đ
Layla was referred to us by our friends at Young Lives vs Cancer, at a point where everything in her world had stopped. Diagnosed during the pandemic, life suddenly got very small.â
â
Last summer, she came on one of our sailing adventures. Here's what she had to say about it: đŁď¸â
â
"The change in scenery can change the way you think. You take more initiative. On the boat with your crew, you work together and figure stuff out with everyone. You feel more independent. It definitely boosts my confidence.â
â
"The people you meet mean so much more to you. Everyone understands and it's easy to click with them. It's nice not having to explain yourself. If you say something about cancer, everyone gets what you mean.â
â
"I just feel happy on a trip. It's one of the best experiences you can have."â
â
That is what these trips are about. Having the space to reset, meet people who understand, and remember you are not on your own in this.â
