The @tubetech CL-1b is a modern classic for a variety of reasons. Clean and buttery tone, highly adjustable, and it's fixed timings are killer. Putting together a solid signal chain with well built gear that compliments the sound you're capturing is the sauce to having a record that sounds, well, like a record. Any little bit of tone and subtle improvements you can get in the tracking part of the record will just make your job easier down the line. A little gear goes a long way.
This has a blue kiwi mic pre-amped by shadow hills mono gama which feeds into the CL-1b for some tracking compression and tone. The mic can be a bit bright and sibilant, I find the CL-1b pairs with it fairly well. #Transformers and #tubes, all the good stuff.

Recording is all about capturing and coloring, pushing boundaries or respecting them. This is one of my favorite tools to push, the @spectra1964 610 comp-limiter. Designed in the late sixties, it can deliver some of the gnarliest distortion and tone you'll hear if pushed to extremes. It can also be used quite modestly and technically - all about context and intention. Here it's driving an old prototype microphone from the 50's into some vibey territory, and it sounds mean as all hell when combined with the thermionic culture vulture.

Meters can lie, your ears don't. Listen to what's happening instead of relying on something to tell you that its happening. Honesty can be hard to come by, even from inanimate objects. Damn machines.
