Kaila Yu spent years as an Asian American pinup model, singer and actress, leaning into a hypersexualized image of Asian femininity and burying her doubts about it.
But after the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, she started reckoning with how fetishization can lead to violence — and interrogating her own role in perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
She talks with Anita about her new memoir “Fetishized.” Plus, sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen breaks down how history and Hollywood built the stereotypes in the first place and what we can do to break free.

Just yesterday the International Olympic Committee released a policy banning trans and intersex athletes from competing in women’s events at the Olympic Games and requiring sex testing for all athletes who want to compete in the women’s category. As the landscape for trans athletes in sports at all levels is evolving rapidly, we sat down with Chris Mosier, the first trans athlete to represent the U.S. in international competition. He wrote the foreword for a new book about the future of trans athletes in sports. He was the first trans athlete to qualify for Team USA in 2015, and the first trans athlete to be sponsored by Nike in 2016. Now, more than a decade later, he’s pushing back as sports become a battleground for trans rights.
