Engaged on the Nile, by the permission of the waters, of a foundation in stone. From the stars to the Earth and back round, a few times 🫶🏽✨🌎🌊 Forever again, with the most precious person, in the most precious of lands 🤎
🎞️ - March 2026
Blue Lotus, Nymphaea Caerulea - ‘Dark Blue Water Nymph’ - to the ancients known as sššn (Sheshen), to Medieval taxonomists as Al-Bashnin and to the local Bashmour people for as far back as they can remember, Bashneen.
The blue lotus - considered the “soul of Egypt” to its ancient peoples- critically endangered by modern life & only some decades ago, accessed mostly from university botanical gardens.
As an intuitive traveller - guided by the land - it’s never a surprise, but always a joy to be led to the places I never knew I needed to be. Somewhere along the way, I landed at Hashim’s hidden paradise in Aswan - an eco project re-introducing the critically endangered Bashneen back into its historical natural habitat; and on the eve of a big relocation. Bashneen, the very flower I prayed I could one day encounter in the wild, little knowing I’d soon enough be replanting her back into the Nile. What a gift - to be in service just for a moment - to this river and to this plant - both of whom I love, so inexplicably.
Poem by me - an offering to the Nile.
Swipe for a mural of ancient Bashneen offerings, including a mix with fungi (…), on the walls of Dandara Temple, Luxor.
Thank you dear brother Hashim 🤎🪷
It’s been a 2 and a half year hiatus from directing, & a welcomed period of deep-dive research - an almost total recalibration of what it means to be an artist - and more than anything, an advocate for the Earth.
Over the course of the last years, spending so much time on the road and in a mix of different societal systems, animistic-revival groups and Indigenous communities; I’ve realised how important it is to make our relationship with the natural world a priority. And perhaps surprisingly, how much of that relationship can be developed through storytelling.
There is an exquisite and expansive repertoire of folk tales and myths all around us - going back thousands of years - located in the environment; a hill or a mountain or a river or a coastline. The stories of our ancestors live in the land and their patterns exist there still. These folktales, though seemingly simple, hold an intelligence we have forgotten; a reminder of the spirit and personality of the Earth that all of us come from. Remembering her stories is an acknowledgement of care and respect; a powerful act of reclamation of who we are and what we had taken away from us by fundamentalist religion.
Sometimes, glimpses of the answers to the biggest questions can fall gently, like a kiss, almost like they’ve always been there. How much of change can in fact be subtle, internal, constructive and beautiful?Perhaps, the tools are all here already.
These last years have also been a time of pilgrimage and seeking permission from our own sacred sites across Europe, in an acknowledgement to the spirit of what wants to be expressed ~ especially the long suppressed melodies of the feminine. And along the way, this ambling pilgrimage has inverted the colours on what I thought I knew of the ancient and Hellenistic world - becoming its own tale of extraordinary encounters and precious discoveries, conversations and wisdoms that are all themselves worthy of their own telling… one day no doubt.
What a privilege and a joy it is to be back on set, and with everything that I have, singing for the Earth.
