70 years ago today, the Universe expanded and the world rejoiced with the arrival of Leslie the Great. My mother was a tiny lady with a massive spirit that lived life to the absolute fullest. A Campfire Girl, a world traveler, a Baylor MBA, the OG corporate girly, and a multilingual rolodex of everything magical, hilarious, and beautiful. She was a testament to how much we can do with the time that we have.
My divine creator, my Cancer Moon, my Library of Alexandria, my sweet mommy. I wish that I could hold you and hear you and know for certain that I’m tethered to this earth with purpose. You journeyed on just four months ago, and I wonder where you’ve gone and what you’ve seen, and I wish you could tell me what’s next in the great beyond. You come to me in dreams, and that’s been my favorite way to wake up since you left. How lucky am I to call you back to me in moments of rest and comfort?
I dance to your playlists, I listen to your voice memos, I write your name, and I smell your perfume - on my wrists, my clothes, my soul if I could spray it! I say that I miss you aloud incase you can hear me between your new adventures. You live in my throat most often, caught where my grief sits and my sadness swells and my voice quakes… I’m learning to hold myself in these times, the way that only you could. At other times, you move between my heart and my mind, but you are never not here. How lucky am I to love you, even in absence?
I truly hope for all our lives to be lived with as much enthusiasm, determination, curiosity, compassion, and panache as my mother’s. Today on her birthday I ask that you be brave, love big, and wear something fabulous. Eat a slice of pineapple upside down cake, or a deadly rich chocolate ganache. Dance and sing and laugh and flirt and, ffs, tell people you love them - obnoxiously loud, with curse words, and often! If this cruel world must keep spinning, then so should we.
Besides, she’d be so pissed if we didn’t party 🪩
It is with our deepest sorrow that we say goodbye to our Mother, Leslie Claire Brooks. Leslie departed this world in the early hours of Sunday March 16th after a heroic battle with cancer. The sadness is profound, and far too great for any words to suffice at this time.
As we carry this grief, we remind ourselves how lucky we are to be the bearers. How tremendously grateful we are to have experienced a love so profound.
It was an honor to be your daughters, and our greatest privilege to walk you home.
“Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says:
“There, she is gone!” There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here she comes!”
