Three meetings later—from the salty tang of Goa to the sublime green of Surrey—the “never meet your heroes” rule remains broken.
Every time I meet her I come away wiser and wonderstruck.
I am referring to Elspeth Beard, anyone who aspires to do long-distance motorcycling, of course, knows about Elspeth.
She is an award winning British architect and motorcyclist who became the first British woman to circumnavigate the globe solo on two wheels.
Between 1982 and 1984, she clocked 35,000 miles across four continents on a 1974 BMW R60/6, a journey later chronicled in her memoir, Lone Rider.
Today we poked the Himalayan and the Classic 650 through narrow and verdant Surrey lanes on a stunningly beautiful day.
I am sure these lanes have echoed with the thump of British singles for more than a hundred years and these two motorcycles felt like they were retracing their own history. Royal Enfield has been making motorcycles since the curtain came down on the Victorian era at the dawn of the 20th century - this years the brand celebrates bring in continuous production of motorcycles for 125 years.
We started the ride at Elspeth’s home, the Munstead tower. Constructed in 1898 this Victorian water tower was a marvel in architecture and hydro engineering. Elspeth has painstakingly and ingeniously made it into a unique and wonderful place to live.
The Munstead Tower had a three-year head start on the Surrey skyline before the first Royal Enfield rumbled to life in 1901. They share a stubborn Victorian DNA, born from a time when industrial grit meant building things to outlast their creators.

Bazen bir yolculuk bir hayalle değil… 🏍️
bir kalp kırıklığıyla başlar.
1980’lerin başında, ne internet vardı ne GPS.
Dünya bugünkü kadar ulaşılabilir değildi.
Ama Elspeth Beard için önemli olan ulaşmak değil, gitmekti.
Genç bir mimarlık öğrencisiydi.
Kalbi kırılmıştı.
Hayatına ara vermek istedi.
Ve belki de kimsenin cesaret edemeyeceği bir şey yaptı:
Motosikletini New York’a gönderdi ve tek başına yola çıktı.
Amerika’dan Kanada’ya, Meksika’dan Avustralya’ya…
Haftalarca çalışıp kazandığı parayla yoluna devam etti.
Sydney’de kendi alüminyum çantalarını bile kendisi yaptı.
Kazalar geçirdi, hastanelerde kaldı ama asla vazgeçmedi.
Singapur’da tüm eşyaları ve pasaportu çalındı.
6 hafta boyunca beklemek zorunda kaldı.
Yine de devam etti.
Tayland’da bir kazadan sonra dilini bilmediği bir ailenin evinde kaldı.
Hiç konuşmadan, sadece işaretlerle anlaştılar.
Yol, onu dünyaya yabancılaştırmadı…
insanlara yaklaştırdı.
Hindistan, Nepal, Pakistan…
Her kilometre onu biraz daha değiştirdi.
Ve sonra Türkiye.
Artık fiziksel olarak tükenmişti.
İngiltere’den 65 kilo olarak çıkan Elspeth,
Türkiye’ye ulaştığında sadece 41 kiloydu.
Ama tam da burada durdu.
İyileşti.
Motosikletini onardı.
Kendini toparladı.
Türkiye, onun için sadece bir durak değildi.
Yola devam edebilmek için yeniden ayağa kalktığı yerdi.
Ve devam etti.
3 yılın sonunda,
56.000 kilometre sonra
eve döndüğünde artık aynı insan değildi.
Daha güçlüydü.
Daha cesurdu.
Ve en önemlisi…
kendi yolunu kendisi çizebileceğini biliyordu.
Bazen en büyük başlangıçlar,
en derin kırılmaların içinden doğar.

What an amazing first-ever Bike Night at @thedriftcafe
Around 90 people joined us for a brilliant evening with the legendary @elspethbeard .
A huge thank you to Elspeth for making the six-hour journey north to Cresswell. Her talk about life, adventure, and her trailblazing motorcycle journey around the world was absolutely fascinating. If you ever get the chance to hear Elspeth speak, don’t miss it — equal parts hilarious and inspiring! You can catch her again this year at @armchairadventurefest .
Massive thanks as well to our incredible crew, who worked tirelessly to bring the pizza shack back to life and serve up some of the best homemade wood-fired pizzas we’ve ever had.
And most importantly, thank you to everyone who came along — especially those who braved the cold and rain to ride in. Around 20 bikes (including four sidecar outfits) for our very first Bike Night isn’t bad at all!
We’re thinking about making Bike Night a monthly thing… who’s keen?
