During a six-week residency in the metal studio at Starworks in Star, North Carolina, artist and metalworker Elsa Hoffman developed new works of sculptural furniture in direct response to the space, its materials, and the surrounding region. “My work begins from a kind of searching, feeling for something real, something meaty. My surroundings are my source material. The natural and architectural patterns and details of North Carolina shape my forms and designs. Inspired by the ancient craft of terrazzo, I gather and repurpose aggregates—brick, stone, and other fragments—to embed within my concrete work. These scraps of materials, mined from local building projects, scavenged along the coastline, and salvaged from a beloved property being sold, are fragmented mementos. They tell tales and preserve a subtle storyline of place and relationship. By creating objects for rest from steel, concrete, and rubble, I explore how furniture can embody both repose and restlessness, ornament and decay. What emerges are not just places to sit, but objects that hold memory and tension; grounded in their surroundings, materially honest, and unmistakably alive.” “Restless Nature,” a solo exhibition of sculptural furniture by @elsa.hoffman , is on view May 16–June 6, 2026. Learn more at the link in our bio. Starworks is proud to present this exhibition as part of @handwork2026 , a year-long initiative by @craftinamerica highlighting the importance of the handmade in both historical and contemporary life. #StarworksNC #ElsaHoffman #Metalwork #Handwork2026 #Craft250

Take a glimpse into the studio with our first-ever metal artist-in-residence, @elsa.hoffman 🔥 Over the course of her six-week residency, the North Carolina–based sculptor and furniture maker is transforming @starworksmetal into a space for experimentation. With a process as dynamic as the pieces themselves, Elsa pushes boundaries—using a handheld plasma cutter like a drawing tool, sculpting concrete directly onto steel armatures, and translating her intricate cut-metal designs into textile-inspired patterns. Catch Elsa in action during #Firefest2026 April 3 & 4, where she will lead live demonstrations and share more about her process as our featured metal artist. Don’t miss her upcoming solo exhibition, Restless Nature, opening May 16 at Starworks—a culmination of over five years of evolving ideas and making as an independent artist. A huge thank you to Elsa for sharing her time and talents with us! #elsahoffman #artistinresidence #starworksnc #starworks

i had the honor to design a t-shirt for Red Tail Grains. was a fun continued exploration of how my metal cutouts can be translated into textile designs. get one on their website! /shop @redtailgrains . . in 2012 Red Tail Grains planted their first half acre of wheat the same fall I bought my plasma cutter. it has been an interesting journey to see our two businesses grow and evolve over the years. i did the initial logo design for RTG made out of a plasma cut scrap of steel. Years later now i have designed a t-shirt for the farm- also made from a plasma cut scrap of steel, translated into a multi-colored silkscreen. inspired by Bloody Butcher Dent Corn and the radiating lines of the stone grist mill.
