Last year at the @ruralandproud Spring Summit, @kelly_chuning gave me these threads which are pulled from serapes in her textile works that dismantle the blanket as sites of colonization and erasure. I wasn’t sure what I was saving them for, but knew the occasion would arise. I am delighted to use them in Tatreez samples after learning this form of textile resistance (with an R) from @halasalehtatreez earlier this week in her workshop @books___and. The Summit was the point I decided to turn off the path I was on, and these threads felt like something I collected in haste to fortify the road ahead, things we pick up “just in case”… an apple, a jacket, or the means by which to weave a new condition out of the spent tailings of our past. Summer, fall, and winter have seen me in profound transition and on this snowy spring morning I’m thinking about these threads having travelled from one woman’s hands, in what seems like a former life, to my own hands enacting another woman’s teaching. Threads that become material, while we picture our collective dreams.

Check out the completed Block Portraits of Platt A of the Big Field in the exhibit All Sketches Wish to Be Real opening this weekend @kimballartcenter ! Happy to be showing them with amazing work by @alexandrafuller and @antrasinhausu ! Special thanks to @nancystoaks and the crew at the Kimball. And especially @ren.geisler for making the wheel with me. I have to miss the opening, but if you get to see it, send me photos!

Update! After 15 years at the University of Utah, I’ve resigned from my tenure faculty appointment in the Division of Multi-disciplinary Design. I’ll stay on as an adjunct to teach on a limited basis and will continue my research and creative work as an independent scholar. I’m opening a new studio and shop called Books and Supply! It will carry art, architecture, and design books as well as studio, pigment, and bookbinding supplies and tools. Lots planned for this space, I hope you will all join me! I’ve made a form to collect contacts for a newsletter and updates, link in bio. Hoping to rely less on socials and would love to send you mail IRL. @books___and PS> I might need help moving all this stuff, yikes!
