A few days ago, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security released its third Red Flag Alert for the USA related to the Trump Administration’s anti-trans initiatives. The following are a couple of quotes from that publication: “… the Lemkin Institute believes that the United States is squarely within the early to middle stages of a genocidal process against trans people, the goal of which is to completely erase transgender people not only from public life but also from existence in the U.S. and globally.” “Currently, the United States government is pursuing a strategy to impose an alien identity on trans people through hostile laws. When that fails, we can expect the government, if not stopped by internal and external pressures, to move towards strategies of containment involving the criminalization of the entire community based solely on its existence.” Last month, when PBD podcast host, Patrick Bet-David asked Keven Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, what should be done to address transgender adults, Roberts replied, “You outlaw it.” I don’t even know where to begin. All I can say is that I feel very unsettled and stressed, but mostly, I’m angry. I’m deeply bothered by people who lack the compassion and empathy to see our humanity. We deserve to be loved, respected, and treated with care and dignity. Pictured is a quick sketch I drew of a sign held in a photograph by Mariette Pathy Allen, titled “Day of Remembrance”, New York, 2001. . . . . #TransRights #transgender #trans #AntiTransBills #MariettePathyAllen

Sketchbook Drawing + A few screenshots from a report released by The American Immigration Council. From the transatlantic slave trade to the prison-industrial complex, the United States has always profited off inhumanity and the enslavement of black and brown people.

Some illustrations I drew a couple years ago for New York Magazine’s “The Transgender Family Handbook.” The publication provided 14 pages of information on coming out, gender-affirming care, navigating schools, and so much more. I created several illustrations. These are a few that did not make the final cut. (Also, the guide is still online as a resource for trans kids and their families.) 🏳️‍⚧️ #transgender #trans #GenderAffirmingCare #TransHealth #NonBinary #GenderNonConforming #LGBTQ #EditorialIllustration #TransYouth

I flew to LA last week to see some friends. It was my first time visiting. I had a great time and look forward to another trip someday. Hopefully, I don’t bring the clouds with me next time. A few pics from the trip: (1-3) When I was in college, researching the history of lesbian art, I learned about Judith Baca and her piece “The Great Wall of Los Angeles.” It’s over a mile long. Twenty years later, I got to see the “Gay Rights” section of the mural in person. (4) New snapshot for my photo collection of Simpsons graffiti (5) I saw a handful of cats. I wanted to snatch a black cat I saw at the Santa Monica Pier, but I was unsuccessful. (6) 🍩 (7) Watched the sunset and the city lights twinkle from Griffith Observatory. (8) Venice Canals (9) I walked past some famous people (10) Went to The Broad (11) Had dinner and drinks at The Black Cat Tavern. It’s no longer a gay bar, but it used to be. Two years before Stonewall, undercover police raided the Black Cat Tavern on New Year’s Eve and brutally attacked and arrested patrons. A couple months later, the community organized a counter protest against the police. It was one of the first LGBTQ civil rights demonstrations in Southern California.

I took a week off from work in August and went on bike rides, spent time with friends, I went to Astoria, stayed at the Sou’Wester for a night, watched the sunset on the beach in Seaview, went camping at Forlorn Lakes, I turned 43, and had a little picnic with a friend at the Bluffs. (We have the same birthday and celebrated with a little bottle of prosecco and cupcakes.)

I went on a 4 day trip with a friend to Mt. Shasta and had such a good time. I’ve camped and hiked a few mountains on the Cascade Range and Mt. Shasta was one of the prettiest hikes I’ve been on. The first set of pics are from the hike. Pic 4 shows the different colors and variety of volcanic rocks. Pic 5 is where we stopped our hike and headed back. (I circled a hiker for size reference.) The second set of pics are from Pluto’s Cave, a 190,000 years old partially collapsed lava tube. It’s a little over a mile long. After the cave, we stopped in Weed, California to grab some souvenirs (even though we are not stoners.) We also stopped at Hedge Creek Falls, and soaked in Castle Lake with a family of baby ducks.

On Saturday, I stopped by Blue Sky Gallery to view Mariette Pathy Allen’s retrospective exhibition, “Breaking Boundaries: 50 Years of Images.” For anyone unfamiliar with Mariette Pathy Allen, she’s a photographer who has been capturing images of transgender and gender-variant people for the past 50 years. Aside from viewing her work at the gallery, I also had the opportunity to attend her in-person artist talk. She provided a back story to almost every photo on display. Hearing those stories was my favorite part. Pics: (1) A sketch of M.P.A. at Blue Sky Gallery talking about her photograph of “Max and Cori in The Bath” (2) “Lou Sullivan at Home,” San Francisco, 1990 (3) “Sylvia Rivera, Modeling the Red Cape She Wore at the Gay Pride Parade,” NYC, 1996 (4) “First Timer at A Transgender Gathering,” 1991 (5) Signed Copy of M.P.A’s book, “The Gender Frontier” (6) A clip of Max and Cori from the documentary “Southern Comfort.” If you’re in Portland, the exhibit is on display until the 28th. Also, check out Jesse Egner’s exhibit while you’re there. #transgender #trans #t4t #TransPhotography #illustration #sketchbook #TransgenderPhotography #NonBinary #GenderNonConforming #gendervariance #MariettePathyAllen #LGBTQ #QueerArt #SouthernComfort #gendervariant
