⨠Itâs Star Trek Day!!! â¨
TL;DR: Star Trek is a beautiful series that has fundamentally shaped my life and the world. This is my love letter to it. Live long and prosper đ
59 years ago today, Gene Roddenberry set his sights to the stars and CBS premiered what was to unexpectedly become one of the longest running, most beloved series of all time. A love letter to science fiction, philosophy, and hope - hope that, one day, our civilization would become accepting and welcoming of all people, regardless of race, class, gender, orientation, or species.
Saved from cancellation by Lucille Ball herself, this iconic show continues to test social barriers and break societal norms. It inspired technology like automatic doors, the flip phone, tablets, voice activated technology (like Siri), universal translators, and so much more! Since its first release, Star Trek has spawned 12 series (including the upcoming Starfleet Academy), 14 movies, countless Star Trek conventions, and an undying community of fans who will always find home together amongst the stars.
Here are a few of my favorite Star Trek costume memories over the years. From the LA Star Trek immersive pop-up experience, to showing up on the last day of filming for âThe End is Nyeâ in costume to joke with Bill Nye and Seth MacFarlane, only to learn the whole crew were Trekkies and the producer/director was Brannon Braga, producer of Star Trek: Voyager and creator of 7 of 9 (my favorite character).
Next up,
@comic_con always fills my Trekkie heart in unexpected ways. Here are some đ moments: Sitting on the re-built set from âA Space Adventure Hourâ episode of Strange New Worlds at the
@paramountplus Lodge, and meeting the 15th Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, randomly on the street at San Diego Comic Con on Intergalactic Friendship Day! Discovering the Starfleet Barbie box in 2018 while wandering Gaslamp was a particular treat.
Finally, the 2023 WGA/SAG strikes landed on Star Trek day that year. That day, I met George Takei and Jeri Ryan - my aforementioned favorite 7 of 9 - on the picket lines. It was everything to me. I have so much more to say, but Iâll end with simply:
â¨đ Happy #StarTrekDay everyone đâ¨
