The folders I found most interesting made me think about how someone decides on the single word used to classify a picture. My favorite folder was California Life. I found the picture of a woman wearing a leather jacket with a flames pattern. On the backs of the combinations, the large text refers to the subject heading (folder) and quotes from two books that helped me think about how language can both clarify and limit what an image is.
Excited to share a fashion communication guide I’ve been working on for the @nyplpicturecollection !
In 1930, Picture collection curator Romana Javitz wrote, “The public is realizing that the Picture Collection is not an art file but a picture encyclopedia.”
