the third pinned post for my instagram channel is about #boneglass itself. What is it, what is speacial about my work, how did i get this idea.... nevertheless I am always so so happy about thoughts or more questions via DM or comment. ā¤ļøš¦“ your Bonelady Ella
In my last reel so many interesting comments and thoughts were shared with me, that I knew itās definitely time to share a little explanation video. Why do I work with bones?what is my motivation?
how do I work?
Of course this can not all be explained within one video but itās a start⦠and Iām looking forward to many more comments talking into the idea of working with bones: positive and negative ones because that is the only way we can bring these important discussions on the table. #sustainableliving #ethicaldesign #boneglass #conciousconsumer #fromnosetotail
My Passion Boneglass. This is 1 of 3 Videos explaining what the hell I am doing and why. More infos about the Boneglass material and the motivation behind the project will follow asap. It was so difficult to put all my thoughts in these short posts but I hope it gives a bit more insight into my project. #𦓠#boneglass #ellaeinhell #ecoelegance
For our upstairs shared bathrooms artist @ellaeinhell has created two custom design mirrors with āBoneglassā -and hold on- it is glass made with animal bones.
Ella Einhell, creative director at Osso Raw Materials, has innovated Boneglass ā a material based on a brilliant 15th-century technique that was nearly forgotten. After extensive research into the lost recipes, she worked with experts to develop it into a modern recycling material, using eco-certified bones from local small farmers with ethical husbandry and industrial glass grinding sludge. This transforms materials that would otherwise be discarded into a new resource for design and architecture.
Alongside her research and the first larger architectural projects in their new factory, she is also creating bespoke design objects from Boneglass. The material carries unique opal-like hues and color variations of green, blue, white or brown depending on the animal species, blending traditional craft, modern material research, and sustainable design.

A candleholder that does more than hold light ā it tells a story. ⨠available at @loom__space
Made from my self-developed Boneglass, this piece combines local craftsmanship with true sustainability. My material is created from recycled glass and animal bones sourced from ethical, organic farming ā transforming waste into valuable, lasting objects.
Why bones? Because theyāre often discarded or burned, despite their incredible potential. Instead, I turn them into something timeless, with a softly opaline structure that makes every design unique.
And local production? For me, itās not just about conserving resources but also supporting local artisans and businesses. Every candle lit in this holder symbolizes mindful consumption and the value of true craftsmanship.
šÆļø For sustainable design that tells a story ā and isnāt found everywhere.
What do you think about this?

Since I began researching and developing my zero-waste boneglass as a designer in 2020, designing objects took a backseat and became only a small part of my work. Donāt get me wrongācreating and refining my material is deeply fulfilling and excitingābut my designer heart missed sketching, conceptualizing, and bringing objects to life.
For 2024, my goal was to focus on creating and sharing new designs with the world. And I did it! I feel incredibly blessed, and my designer heart is full again. However, in all of this, I often forget to treat myself with my own work. Even though I love how the products turn out, I always seem to make them only to ship off to galleries, shops, or my online store, or to gift them to loved ones. The only pieces that stay with me are quirky, imperfect āB-gradeā ones that I canāt bring myself to throw away but arenāt good enough to sell.
So, for December 2024, Iām setting a new goal: to use my own designs at home just for me. Iāve started this commitment with my new wine glasses, and it feels amazing. (Donāt worryāmore will be available in a few days at @galerieparadis.paris !)
Do you know that feeling when you spot a beautiful design, only to find it in every other store you walk into? Itās like the magic disappears. Thatās exactly what I wanted to avoid when creating with my zero-waste boneglass.
Each piece I design isnāt just unique because of the materialāa blend of recycled glass and ethically sourced animal bonesāitās also unique in where you can find it. Every design is exclusive to one shop. One vase, one collection, one place.
Why? Because I believe in slow design: creating sustainable, locally crafted objects that stay special. Just like my boneglass, no two are alike.

After all these videos showing process and the work with my zero waste boneglass I thought itās time to show the other side of my work.. The FAIL. This one was an especially pretty one I think and at least it was not a classical āElla flips totally out fail šā but just a regular one
I am so happy that both @lucifervetriarium and I are fine and we reproduced the platform prototype for zero waste shop interior after a short moment of shock ( at least I was in shock he stayed totally calm š)
By the way the cool platform I used for inspiration is by @aufgabenull as I found out. I hope their production was less⦠adventurous š¦“š¦“
I am very honored to receive the Tagesspiegel award as one of the 100 most important minds in Berlin in 2024. At this point, I would like to express my gratitude to all my supporters. Even though I became self-employed with my research and my project three years ago, I see my work as an absolute network project. Without the network of experts ā from chemists, glassmakers, animal bone specialists, archaeologists, to artisans, as well as friends and family ā my material developments would never have come this far. So, thank you all for your tireless dedication and support
