An evening dedicated to Dmitri Shostakovich
Last week, Elisabeth Leonskaja @elisabethleonskaja , one of the last pianists to have played for Shostakovich as a student, presented a program of his works from the 1940s and 50s.
A few months after the 50th anniversary of the composerâs death, the program at the @boulezsaal highlighted different facets of his piano writing: the Concertino for Two Pianos with MihĂĄly Berecz @mihaly_berecz , followed by the Second Piano Sonata (1943), and concluding with the deeply moving Piano Quintet in G minor (1940) with the Signum Quartett @signumquartet

For me, the Piano Sonata No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich is a deeply introspective work. It speaks quietly, with great restraint, yet carries an intense emotional depth. Each time I return to it, I discover new layers hidden within its simplicity.
When I play a sonata by Shostakovich, I feel a quiet conversation with history.
Behind the irony and sharp rhythms, there is deep vulnerability.
My role is simply to listen â and let the piano speak honestly. Looking forward to playing Sonata no.2 in Arcachonâs Olympia Theater, 19th April.
