This work is included in "Longer Light: Selections From the Collection" at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU, a gift in honor of my grandfather, Bill Hansen, who attended WSU in the 1930s but was unable to finish his education as he was needed on the family farm. WSU always held a place of reverence to me as a child, as grandpa Bill always loved to talk about it and keep up with their sports games.
Eastern Washington was my grandparents home, but they lived in Western Washington in their later years, the history of coming from depression era farms and ranches east of the Cascades was strong, and visiting Yakima with them was always powerful. The rolling wheat fields and apple orchards were woven into me through my dad's stories of his childhood, and Bill's stories of trying to shake his hardscrabble cowboy youth. I can still taste that dry air as we crossed the mountains, the feel of that hot summer sun coming down into Yakima, the old falling down barns advertising applets and cotlets on the side of the road.
My own education in Eastern Washington and working on a ranch in Montana was greatly influenced by this family dynamic. My relationship to the land of America is a big part of being a father and passing on family stories, giving the gift of stories and knowledge, showing my kids the many parts of this beautiful country, helping them create their own connections and stories to this beautiful land. Our home is inside us, we are just visitors on this land.
It's the 9th anniversary of the time I collaborated with Dale Chihuly! He had no idea he collaborated with me, I was able to get this piece on loan from Marlborough, his NY gallery, through Leo Fitzpatrick who curated this humdinger of an exhibition in NYC.
Chihuly's Jerusalem Cylinders are some of my favorite of his works, they are both historically and technically very complex works. It was an honor to secretly collab with Uncle Dale, even though if he knew he might be upset with me. I created a tweaker shed in art fair in NYC that you had to peer through my own glass to view his work. The door was locked, so you could only view it through my homemade lens. This installation went fairly unnoticed, though personally it felt like a massive tectonic shift in the world of craft and glass, bringing this very Northwest conversation to NYC, inviting the international art scene into this very layered historical conversation between two NW boys.
