Opuntia engelmannii, the prickly pear, is an invasive species that actively disrupts the ecosystem wildlife depends on at Loisaba Conservancy. Left unchecked, it spreads rapidly - outcompeting native vegetation, degrading grazing land, and altering the habitat that wildlife relies on.
@Loisaba_Conservancy has dedicated teams working round the clock to identify, uproot, and manage the spread of prickly pear across the conservancy, protecting and restoring native rangeland. In 2025 alone, the team has removed over 250,000 plants - a relentless effort to stay ahead of one of the landscape's most persistent threats.
And nothing goes to waste. The harvested fruit finds its way to your table as a dessert, or into your glass as a cocktail.
