The Nepal School Project #5086
Design Intention-
Our design provides rural Nepali children with a holistic learning environment extending beyond traditional classrooms. It's a safe, playful community space that is resilient to local elements, respects cultural traditions, and is ecologically and economically sustainable to build, maintain, and expand, all while upholding aesthetics and function.
Design Features-
The central playground is vital, featuring two interactive activity walls. These walls offer four benefits: they add a third dimension to play, provide shade for play areas and sandpits, ensure privacy for classrooms, and act as a thick, L-shaped barrier between built and unbuilt spaces, making the playground an effective evacuation zone. The staggered room placement creates versatile spaces: semi-open green areas for outdoor classroom activities, a rear verandah for open-air classes, and an orchard connected to all classrooms.
Construction Methodology-
Walls are 150mm thick, light-infilled ferrocement, either pre-cast or cast in-situ. Foundations use local stone and masonry. The main structure is a framed metal system with hollow mild steel tubes. A 450mm stone masonry plinth offers a strong connection to open spaces while acting as a flood barrier.

"Architecture is a way of thinking about the world very similar in structure to writing a book, since both disciplines represent the same field and domain"

Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.
