India’s Southern Railway has ordered a technical and safety probe to find out why an overcrowded escalator at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station suddenly stopped and moved backwards on May 6, resulting in two women being hospitalized with minor injuries, The Times of India reports. A safety engineer is conducting a detailed inquiry, and records are also being sought from Johnson Lift and Escalator Co., which is responsible for the unit’s maintenance. The incident occurred shortly after the simultaneous arrival of several trains when many passengers attempted to board at once. Because the reverse movement remained slow, major injuries were avoided, railway authorities said. Preliminary findings show the escalator may have stopped after the emergency-stop button was accidentally pressed, causing the brake mechanism to slip and resulting in the escalator moving backwards.
With ideas using advanced technology to support city officials, first responders and residents before, during and after natural disasters, student teams from Athens, Greece, and Hong Kong (HK) Special Administrative Region (SAR) were named co-champions of Otis’ 2026 Made to Move Communities challenge, Otis announced on May 6. The winning student teams are from Geniko Lyceum Filothei in Athens and HKFYG Lee Shau Kee College in HK SAR. The Athens team developed a concept for an AI-enabled container that tracks rainfall fluctuation and resultant water levels, in turn activating a preventive response system that alerts local emergency management officials and protects vulnerable residents during flooding events. The HK SAR team developed a concept for a combined AI and augmented-reality system to help first responders see and stay connected in smoke-filled, low-visibility environments. More than 200 high school students from 18 schools in 14 countries and territories participated in this year’s Made to Move Communities challenge.
During a Latour first quarter market update in April, Andrea Veggian, CEO of Sweden’s Innovalift AB, a Latour portfolio company, said the megatrends of digitalization and sustainability are reshaping the lift industry in the short/mid-term and over the longer term, respectively, Innovalift reported. A clear shift is already apparent with digitalization, he said, with customers now expecting more connected and intelligent vertical-transportation systems, better monitoring, predictive maintenance and more user-friendly interfaces. “With AI, this is accelerating,” Veggian said. Sustainability, at the same time, remains a fundamental business driver. Innovalift demonstrates its commitment to net zero through the Science Based Targets initiative, or SBTi, and strives to reduce environmental impact across the value chain. Due to regulations and evolving design criteria, “energy efficiency, durability and (carbon) footprint are becoming key decision factors,” Veggian observed.
Elevator replacements are part of a government program in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, aimed at improving safety and accessibility at 118 aging multi-unit apartment complexes, The Asia Business Daily reports. Funding is through the province’s Residential Environment Improvement and Safety Faculty Support Project, and applications started being processed in April. As of now, applications are still being accepted for elevator replacements in Gwangmyeong City and Namyangju City, which have not yet met their quotas for this work. Additionally, the province is accepting applications for fire-safety enhancements from all of its 31 cities and counties, which will come from a remaining budget of KRW30 million (US$20,403).
