”How do we fall in love with a mathematical shell?“
This work invites the audience to confront the ”hollow nature“ of virtual characters. Display devices from different eras present representative 3D characters of their time—from low-poly models in early 3D games to contemporary virtual idols. These models are altered through unconventional rendering pipelines, exposing the raw features of 3D assets.
The audience will hold a positioning device, designed in the shape of a coordinate widget commonly seen in 3D software. As viewers approach, the model’s polygon count gradually decreases until only a pure triangle remains. Upon crossing this critical point, an explosion occurs—all vertices collapse into an absolutely standardized 2D plane.
Through glitch aesthetics, I attempt to interrogate the plight of youth in the digital age: we knowingly project emotions onto hollow shells, yet still imbue them with soul within the fissures of clipping glitches. When pushed beyond the limits of polygon count, do they still exist?
