Someone once told me that an artist is simply a person with an inner world worth sharing… I probably spend too much time teasing through which parts of myself to share, but I am here, trying to be honest, trying to love.

This was a challenging show for me. John and I were exhausted, we didn’t have a sound-check, and I felt like I had to fight for the crowd a little bit, so the nerves swept in, and my throat felt like it was closing… Performance can be scary, at least for me, it feels vulnerable, and I really want to do a good job— but the tough moments expose character, and I’ve come a long way. I’ve learned to fight back against fear when it tries to lead in my life, it’s that attitude that has enabled me to pursue music to begin with. I don’t think this line of work makes sense for me practically, my family certainly doesn’t understand it, but there is a call on my life. I’m really excited to share what I’ve been working on 🫶🏾

Throwback to my lil album cover shoot on Queen West. The main reference photo for this shoot was a picture of a middle-aged habesha woman in cap and gown that I found on LinkedIn. The photo wasn’t highly stylized, it almost felt like a one-take passport photo, but the subject had this deeply captivating gaze. Her hair was braided in the way my aunties do for special occasions, she was adorned with beautifully audacious cross-engraved golden earrings, and she wore the same Nikkisaat (traditional neck tattoos) that my grandma has. I could see her whole story in that picture, and my own— my mom comes from rural Adwa, Tigray, and she was raised as a shepherd girl of all things. I was moved by the juxtaposition of her age and traditions, against that Western graduate attire that I’ve worn myself a few times over— a late bloom. Thank you to @ebti_n @brightcolours and @rahsthetics for offering your gifts to uplift my vision. It was a day I won’t soon forget.
