Had the pleasure of shooting for @tabbenoitofficial and @officiallarrymccray last night at the Aggie Theater. A great venue and a great show made for an incredible evening!
Back in the first photography class I took, probably around 8 years ago now, my classmates and I sat in that large white-walled room for the first time, and our teacher stood and told us to try to convey an emotion in every shot we took. My teacher’s method of teaching us that lesson was to spend the entire semester shooting with a pinhole camera, which was essentially a box with a piece of light-sensitive paper inside and a little hole with a wooden shutter on the outside. We were allowed two shots a week and developed all the photos ourselves immediately after taking them.
You may be wondering, what did we do with the other three days of the school week? The simple answer is, we brainstormed and wrote about the pictures we wanted to take. Every week was graded on our intent behind each photo, not the execution. Learning this lesson so early in my photography journey gave me a unique perspective on what photography is and what it can be. Most importantly, it taught me that the photos you take aren’t just about freezing and capturing moments but about making your audience feel what either you or the subject felt in that moment.
I think these photos from this weekend really show me getting back to those roots, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
