My online course with @nodecenter is back! Register by May 28th on the Node Center for Curatorial Studies website. See you there! How can art address issues such as nature, regeneration and climate justice? What can we learn from activist methods to create projects that bring actual change? This course focuses on expanding the potentials of ecologically engaged art practices. Over five weeks, we will learn from case studies and thinkers who offer innovative approaches to climate justice and to reimagining our relationship with nature. With the aim of moving beyond mere representation, we will explore how to apply ecological principles to creative projects that inspire action.

SUELO Mallorca vuelve con El taller de llata: el legado de Ses Madones de Capdepera es una iniciativa de Biennal B, promovida por Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma y el Consell de Mallorca, en colaboración con el Ajuntament de Capdepera. Inscripciones en la web de @esbaluardmuseu y en mi link en bio La llata es el nombre genérico que se le da en Capdepera, y en algunos lugares de Mallorca, a la cestería tradicional hecha con hojas de palmito. Esta icónica cestería, que resuena con prácticas ancestrales a lo largo y ancho del planeta, junta el cuidado de la única palmera autóctona de la isla, el garballó o palmito, con un patrimonio artesanal de gran importancia. En este taller, que impulsamos desde el programa de Biennal B, hablaremos de Ses Madones de sa llata y nos adentraremos en las raíces de esta artesanía, Conoceremos los procesos, desde la recolección de las hojas de palmito a los diferentes pasos de la elaboración de las cestas. Sentadas en un círculo de sillas, emulando a Ses Madones, las personas que participen, aprenderán a preparar las hojas y hacer llata, el trenzando que da nombre a esta artesanía y que es la base de cualquier cesta. En contacto con esta artesanía, a través de nuestras manos, y dentro del círculo, nos transportaremos a otro tiempo y a otro ritmo, en el que volveremos a vincularnos con la capacidad humana para crear y construir en comunidad. La sesión estará guiada por las manos expertas de Araceli Iranzo y Antonella Farris, de La Escuela Artesana y Antic Mallorca, respectivamente. La Escuela Artesana ha recibido el premio Promoción Artesana de Mallorca, concedido por el Consell de Mallorca. Antic Mallorca ha sido seleccionada para formar parte de la marca de garantía moda artesana de Mallorca, del Consell de Mallorca. También forma parte de la guía España Artesana y de la guía europea de artesanía Homo Faber.

FORCES (Forçes in mallorquín) is on display in @sontugores until Saturday 18.04 when I will offer a small concert in the inner courtyard of the gallery (last slide). I always conceived this album to be shown as an artwork, with the analog photos that accompany the songs written between 2012 and 2022 (year in which the album was released). A few years later, I get to show it in a space so resonant and filled with magical echo, that I'm offering open singing sessions tonight and Friday 18-20h to anyone keen on playing with the force of our voices together. In Forces style, the feeling of awe in the powers of life has made me produce a few new images of my new home on Mallorca, as well as some sketches of new songs inspired by my beloved Caribbean and dub music. Those who join me on Saturday will get a sneak peek of these fresh works in progress, including a song dedicated to Volcán Barú (slide 5). Visitar Barú fue visitar los inicios de la vida. Fue viajar en el tiempo. Fue nutrirme de la fuente. Darse al camino, que con cada paso se hace y deshace a la vez. Gracias @karenholmberg por invitarme a acompañarte en tu retorno. Cerrando ciclos abrimos nuevos.

Hoy es el primer día que puedo caminar sin sentir rastro del esfuerzo de bajar el Volcán Barú el miércoles pasado con @karenholmberg La primera foto es parte del cráter del volcán. Dicen que es la panza de "la india embarazada" (como le dicen a Barú, además de El gigante dormido. Por eso al parecer es "elle"). Y en el video se oyen los jilgueros que acompañan en ese bosque mágico a medio trayecto. Aún busco las palabras y el espacio para contarles lo que fue la experiencia de las 9+ horas que nos tomamos para sentir el volcán. Por ahora les dejo algunas impresiones. It was alchemical to see the Volcán Barú in Panama from different eyes and the opposite side of the crater, two decades after my doctoral fieldwork. I’m grateful for Panamanian (based in Mallorca) art-science practitioner @elaspalding (& @estudionuboso & @eljilgueroreserve ) for accompanying me on this adventure! In the early 2000s I used to babysit the seismic equipment of my favorite genius inventor, before he developed the iconic Raspberry Shake citizen science device. Super exciting to see the new monitoring systems he is developing now to give warnings for seismicity, flash floods, and lahars and to visit his seismic vault where equipment is being tested on temperature stable and quiet piers. His partner and her heliconia magic was as pure as ever, too. If you have never smelled a Victoria flower, which I never had, their two day pineapple-vanilla beetle trapping self-pollinating cycle is the stuff of fairy tales. After a day seeing places and people who mattered to me, we took a 4x4 up to Baru’s 3475 m summit on the Boquete side and then hiked down on the Cerro Punta side through Paso Ancho. After sunrise at the summit, while still fairly fresh (despite the 3:30 am wake up), we scrambled through parts of the crater I didn’t know existed to see its “heart” then went through a few thousand meters of descent on unconsolidated material and narrow cliffs. Volcanic rock being broken down into new soil by lichen and moss and the little scrubby flowers that then populate them always bring me joy and the mists and clouds were epic. It took us 9+ hours and somewhere around the 7 hour mark, my legs stopped listening to my brain. I should not have underestimated Baru or downhill hikes. With older eyes and heart I love this volcano just as much as before, if not more, and the people here who mattered to me in an earlier and different stage of life matter as much or more now, too. Seeing them was the biggest magic, especially those who were little when I first met them and now have little ones of their own. I woke up to quetzal birds outside the window as I drank my coffee in Volcan, Panama, and cannot think of a better thing that is possible in this world. 🌋❤️

Ready for a Volcán Barú expedition tomorrow with Dr. @karenholmberg And feeling incredibly grateful and happy to be the artist in this art-sci-life collaboration. Full to the brim, to wake up in @eljilgueroreserve where all the seeds and dreams of @estudionuboso were born, along w me, along with this house that sits quietly on the Barú volcano. Tomorrow, I will get to know it's summit and hike down for the first time. A gift in these crazy times, to connect with the forces of the Earth, which trascend and also deeply influence human timelines - for generations before and after, on end.
