Last month, we celebrated the legendary 2000 Bordeaux vintage at @latetedorbydaniel — a near-perfect year known for balance, structure, and remarkable aging power. While that unforgettable evening has passed, the season is just getting started. This fall, join us for more Zachys dinners, including a Mouton vertical, Angelus, Lafite, Latour, and more.

I imagine most people would try to avoid work travel over their birthday—just not when it’s an opportunity like the one I had this June. Our team arrived in Bordeaux the day of my birthday, almost exactly ten years since my last (first) visit to the medieval city—resplendent in history, wine culture, the most delectable but not as widely known French pastry (cannelĂ©), and, as we were to discover, the coolest wine bars. We traveled up the MĂ©doc to the town of Pauillac on the silty banks of the Gironde. While the town itself may be small, both the reputation and structure of the wines from Pauillac vineyards have stood monumental for centuries. Over three days there, among the legendary chateaux and amid the familiar tang of copper-sulfur mixture in the air ahead of rainy weather, I had the unique privilege of cataloging one of the most extraordinary private collections of historic Bordeaux bottles ever to come to auction: The Collection of Jacqueline (de Rothschild) Piatigorsky. Bottles from vintages back to the mid-19th century, with nothing *younger* than 1942—carefully stored over the many decades (only ever in Bordeaux), judiciously reconditioned by their respective chateaux, and lovingly prepared for new homes, which will be determined when the hammer falls this Friday, September 19th. It’s hard to describe the feeling of being in the same room as such a collection of historic wines, let alone holding them in my hands. A singular professional experience to be part of, a birthday I’ll never forget, and my love for Bordeaux—the city, its wine, its hardworking and jovial people, and of course, its cannelĂ©s—utterly replenished.

Despite my general dislike for barstools of all shapes and styles (does a truly comfortable barstool exist? I’m doubtful.), nothing beats restaurant bar dining in NYC. Small plates of creative, seasonal veggie dishes, glasses of a delightful Spanish pet-nat rosĂ© (@wine_and_pie taught me “blueberry skin” as a note for flavor and phenolic bitterness), and the last bottle of 2022 Euchariusberg Alte Reben Kabinett from @hofgutfalkenstein at @claud_nyc . I was introduced to this wine by locals in Trier last fall and have been dreaming about its delectable intensity and soaring acidity ever since. How wonderful to meet again—the very same vintage and AP number—and share it with my #1 partner in wine.

There’s a new girl in town and her name is Lulu. A 3.5-year old, 12 lb Yorkie mix with generous amounts of both sweet and spice, who is absurdly obsessed with discarded chewing gum—I’ve pulled four different pieces out of her mouth in 36 hours. We’re both doing our best! (Edit: Follow her @lurescuedlu !)

(And to the inspiration for this piece—which goes without saying😘)

A hectic but oh-so-rewarding day becoming a homeowner (ok, stock cooperative shareholder, but almost the same thing). Tired, grateful, excitedâ˜șïžđŸ—đŸŸ

Transcontinental FaceTime dumpling-making sesh with @toucantam on this beautiful, hopeful weekend—missing friends in faraway places but grateful to stay connected, reminiscing about our izakaya days in Fukuoka, and inspired by @calvindumplings and his epic-sounding dumpling “salsa” đŸ„ŸđŸ„ŸđŸ„Ÿ #dumplings #gyoza #potstickers
