My CARI CARIDAD - Choreography Project Berlin 2025 ✨ 📍 @ejrstudio This choreography was created when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began. I was profoundly moved because many of my students and those dear to me hailed from both nations. This song has always resonated with me due to its references to Vietnam and its conflict, as well as the fact that I have a very close friend from that country. Whenever I think about the song’s melodies and intensity, I get goosebumps. When I initially chose the song, I intended to do something completely different, but I don’t know what energy compelled me to speak with a cleaning lady in Hamburg. She asked me if I was Cuban because I was listening to this song. She then kindly began to explain how Caridad, a figure in the Catholic religion, was syncretized with Oshun, an Orisha of the Yoruba religion, and how our personalities and the jewelry we wore were quite similar. Later, I met with a Babalawo, a Santeria priest, who told me that my grandmother was actually the lost daughter of Oshun and that she desired for me to always be flawless and adorned with jewelry. This choreography, to me, is an expression of many emotions stemming from the histories mentioned above, shaped into movements that connect you with the deepest parts of yourself, allowing you to share that connection with the outside world. I have no words to describe what means to me to see this outcome, I just know that it is an enormous and beautiful feeling. I just can say THANKS to everyone involved ❤️ 🧥 @iloe_official 🎥 @madebyroots_media

Lately I’ve seen many artists talking about how dance has changed. How before there was more originality, more storytelling, more depth. And honestly… I think there is truth in that. Social media changed the way we create. Algorithms changed attention spans. And constant exposure made copying easier than ever. But I also think there is another side we don’t talk about enough. Many artists today are not only trying to create. They are trying to survive. Some people had support, stability or time to fully develop their art. Others had to migrate, start from zero, adapt, learn business, marketing, content creation and how to sustain themselves financially while still trying to protect their creativity. So yes, we should protect the art. We should keep searching for meaning, intention and real connection. But maybe before criticizing everything dance became, we should also ask ourselves some honest questions: Have I really worked enough? Have I trained enough? Have I taken risks? Have I adapted? Have I contributed something to the community? Or have I only criticized what the industry became? Because artists also need to survive. And maybe the real balance starts when we are honest about both.
