MUKUO Takamura
The Pioneer of Anime Background Art
----------
Art director MUKUO Takamura (1938–1992) created background art for some of the most iconic works in the history of Japanese animation, including GALAXY EXPRESS 999, THE DAGGER OF KAMUI, THE PHOENIX: CHAPTER OF HO-O, and GAUCHE THE CELLIST.
This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the full scope of his work.
Held in spring 2026 in Sasebo, Nagasaki—his hometown—the exhibition “MUKUO Takamura: The Pioneer of Anime Background Art” presents approximately 170 works, including hand-painted backgrounds, art settings, and sketches.
Through these works, visitors can rediscover the evolution of visual expression in Japanese animation from the 1980s to the 1990s and appreciate its artistic significance.
