🚶EirGrid proudly participated in the National Transport Authority's Marchathon Step Challenge again this year. 👣
🗓️ Throughout March, 39 teams comprised of 188 colleagues participated in the challenge, displaying energy, enthusiasm, and plenty of healthy rivalry. Together, we clocked a phenomenal 11,371,381 steps that's approximately 8000km!📈
👏Congratulations to our top stepping teams:
🥇 They see us strollin' - 517,901 steps
🥈 Walk a mile in these louboutins - 474,472 steps

☀️ A new milestone for solar energy in Ireland!😎
👆 In this episode of Plugged-In with EirGrid, our series exploring the power system, we explain the significance of solar energy production exceeding 1,000 MW (or 1 GW) in Ireland for the first time.🙌
The considerable increase in solar generation is due to there being more sun shining down on the increased number of solar farms connected to the grid since last autumn.📈 🔆

Anne Dalton, former Kilkenny camogie player, is encouraging local clubs to nominate a volunteer as part of EirGrid’s GAA Community Heroes Campaign 2026.
The campaign recognises the role that GAA volunteers play in enriching and sustaining communities through a nationwide competition.
EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, is committed to engaging with local communities as it works to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable energy supply for everyone.
Now in its second year, the 2026 campaign has been widened to recognise more inspirational volunteers from around the country. A preliminary round will see four provincial winners and four runners-up selected.
The provincial winners’ designated clubs will each receive €5,000, while there will be awards of €1,500 to the clubs of the runners-up.
An overall national winner will be selected from the provincial winners, and their club will receive an additional €5,000, for a total award of €10,000.
Speaking at the recent launch of the campaign in Croke Park, Anne Dalton said:
“EirGrid’s GAA Community Heroes Campaign is a great way in which we can recognise volunteers. Without volunteers the GAA simply would not happen and I would encourage all clubs to get involved with the campaign.”
“When you get involved in GAA as a kid you are not aware of how important volunteers are. As you get older though, you really come to appreciate all that they do and contribute to the running of local clubs. In my own playing career, some volunteers have been with me throughout and I am really grateful to them for all their support.
“With my own family now, I am seeing again just how important volunteers are in keeping clubs going including with training and passing on skills in hurling and camogie to the younger generation.”

Speaking at the recent launch of the campaign in Croke Park, Diarmuid O’Sullivan said: “Volunteers are the cornerstone of every GAA club, and without them it would be a real struggle to sustain local clubs and communities.
“I have been really lucky to have been surrounded by wonderful volunteers throughout my career from my own club of Cloyne, including my father, Jerry. He was a great example of what it means to be a volunteer with all the different roles that he took on over the years and the commitment that he showed. It is often the volunteer who encourages younger people into the GAA as well.
“I hope that clubs get involved and nominate a “Community Hero” volunteer as part of EirGrid’s campaign. People who give so much time to their clubs deserve for their work and dedication to be recognised, and this campaign is a great way to do this.”

EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, is committed to engaging with local communities as it works to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable energy supply for everyone.
Last year’s Community Heroes campaign received many exceptional entries and was ultimately won by Mary Cooke of Naomh Bríd GAA in Laghey, Co Donegal.
For 2026 the campaign has been widened to recognise more inspirational volunteers from around the country. A preliminary round will see four provincial winners and four runners-up selected.
The provincial winners’ designated clubs will each receive €5,000, while there will be awards of €1,500 to the clubs of the runners-up.

Speaking at the recent launch of the campaign in Croke Park, Eamon McGee said:
“Volunteers are really what makes the GAA and without them the GAA would not be the successful organisation that it is.
“Volunteers give so much to their local clubs in terms of their time and commitment, often with very little recognition. I think that there is a really powerful message in that for all of us.
“As I see my own kids now getting involved in GAA, I recognise the commitment and willingness to give back to the local community of volunteers that I saw in so many as I was growing up in my own club of Gaoth Dobhair.
“Everyone involved in a GAA club will know someone who is a GAA Community Hero. Often it is the person who gets the least recognition, so this is a great way to say thank you and to shine a light on all volunteers in local clubs and communities.” More details and how to enter EirGrid’s GAA Community Heroes campaign can be found at: eirgrid.ie/gaa #gaa #communityheroes #community
