Barber, Essaouira 2024 💈✂️ Tucked away in the medina of Essaouira @ehq___ and @lxcesg came across this barber who caught their eye with his white coat and clean, refined appearance. The white coat - the age old uniform of the everyday barber. History of barber-surgeons 🥼✂️ The two professions used to overlap dating back to the 12th century as both trades required blade precision and qualified physicians were not widely available. The standard barbershop used to offer grooming services as well as medical procedures. The familiar red and white barber pole represents this dual trade. Red for blood and white for bandages (the blue was later introduced in the US)💈. Whilst they weren’t doctors, barbers performed blood letting, amputations and mini surgical procedures for locals.
