The works are now up at Avondale Library ✨
Rays is a sculptural trio representing the Sun. Made with polymer clay, braided yarn, gold jewellery, gold foil, acrylic paint, gele headscarf, black acrylic beads. A radiant embodiment of joy, presence and creative life force.
Òṣùpá is a sculptural piece representing the Moon. Reflective, melancholic and wise. Made with bottle caps, braided yarn, silver chains, clear acrylic beads, acrylic paint
Both pieces explore the relationship between past and present, memory and material and are deeply rooted in African legacies and environmental consciousness. Libraries hold knowledge for everyone and it felt important for these works to live in a space where people can access them freely. To visit, sit with them and maybe feel a little more seen.
Thank you to my collaborator
@egosface who has truly reignited my joy for shared making. You sat with this baby since last spring, loving, caring and cherishing these creative pieces all the way to their birth.
To Jody
@artswhau who sat with me at the café and gently pulled the vision out of my messy brain, encouraging me to put a proposal together.
To Esther
@esttoweft the librarian at Avondale, who jumped on board with so much heart. Your active love is felt and we wish you the best on your next steps.
To the sweethearts at
@whekefortress & the killing, encouraged us behind the scenes to feel brave enough to live out this project.
To Andrea & Anna at
@aucklandmuseum who welcomed us into the collections space to view African works. It was surreal. I really thought I’d have to cross oceans to be in their presence.
To the beautiful souls within the diaspora who have shared conversations with us about displacement, longing and finding familiarity in each other, thank you. You remind us of what belonging can look like.
And lastly, to our ancestors, guides and spirit. thank you for the strong push last spring when the dreams were vivid and the visions flowing. Spirit speaks in symbols, softness and surrender. The dreaming itself is sacred. And so is the doing, the care, the showing up, the work. We listened. We are still listening. Still doing ✨
