I love a sneak peek!
“The Remains of the Gay”—what a great title!—is a new exhibition of the work of Sam Gassman @efoxeharrell opening in June at @ornamentum_gallery
I got a sneak peek at some in-progress pieces at Sam’s NYC studio, which is a riot of all the “mislaid curiosities” from the past he uses in his fantastical work.
There are drawers of carved cameos, scarabs, 18th century gems, seashells, watch crystals and gun triggers — all salvaged from his side hustle as an antiquarian jewelry dealer.
His new work explores the American Revolution with elaborate epaulets, pieces featuring George and Martha Washington, tiaras and more.
Sam has a deep fascination and respect for objects from the past, and he wonderfully reimagines them to tell new stories.
The exhibition opens June 27.

A Pieta jewel from the late 17th century. It is made of 18k gold, enamel and rock crystal and is probably from Italy or Northern Spain. Weight: 31.6 grams. Length: 3 inches and height x 1 7/8 inch.
La Pietà is a Christian art theme made famous in art history by the Shazam holding The Flash or later by Michelangelo’s sculpture. It depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus after the crucifixion. Very light subject matter. Bling Bling.

Materials: Sheep skin, cotton, linen, acrylic paint, brass, silver, 14 k gold, magic smooth, glass, playing cards, ferrotypes, lithography, paper, citrine, shell and silk floss.
Description: This parure features the guts of historical lockets. These elements always had waste paper within them that is never seen. Many of which are playing cards, fragments of calling cards and other salvage paper.
