Growing up as first generation Filipino immigrants, we were always told the lighter the skin, the better.
Brown skin was associated with field laborers while the fairer tones were considered elite.
One trip to the Philippines will let you know this mentality runs deep - there are huge billboards everywhere pushing skin whitening soaps and creams.
“Stay out of the sun, anak, you’re gonna get dark!” - is what we were told as kids. IYKYK.
We’re here to squash that way of thinking and all its origins. Embrace being melanated and keep your hood pass intact.

This year was one for the record books. All the highs n lows and dramatic twists n turns any one person would ever want or ask for.
At the height of an amazing moment in my career living in Tokyo and leading that W+K office, a health scare tried to get the best of me. Beating cancer by early detection is the biggest news headline of my year.
And with a ton of mixed emotions, I finish up my time as CCO of W+K Tokyo. I’ve packed it all up and am excited about my move back to the US. I have my two boys, my family and all of the support I need. I’m reenergized to take on whatever is next. But forever will I leave a piece of my heart with such an amazing collection of people- my people, the culture and that crazy strong ambition to do things differently. All of it.
All I can be is extremely grateful and appreciative of my family and all of my friends. Mona is my everything- there’s no way I would’ve made it through without her.
Work, family and health are all interconnected with each other. And 2026 is my time to build off of this foundation. Wishing you a peaceful and prosperous New Year. Let’s make some creative shit together!
Proud to have creatively led such a personal, positive message for my community. This “Plus” Campaign we developed at @wknyc , “Asian+American” — changing a hyphen to a plus, simple yet powerfully symbolizes that we are so much more. This was truly a love letter to the AANHPI community. This campaign celebrates the strength, complexity, and pride of living between two identities.
Thank you to all of the amazingly talented creative people who I had a chance to work with at Wieden!❤️
And thank you @taaforg and @sheilaliriomarcelo for amplifying such a necessary message of pride and strength. Happy to see this work out in the world. 🌎
In 2025, Japanese baseball talent continues to reach new heights on the global stage. 🇺🇸⚾️🇯🇵
From dominant pitching to electrifying offensive performances, Japanese Major Leaguers have earned recognition and admiration worldwide.
To honor these athletes and the places that shaped them, MLB Japan will launch a nationwide manhole cover installation project that celebrates the stories of 12 active Japanese Major League players.
Each manhole will be placed in a location of personal significance to the player: such as their hometown, the school they attended, or the field where they first learned to play.
This project draws inspiration from Japan’s unique and beloved manhole culture, where functional infrastructure becomes an artistic canvas and point of local pride.
Each manhole will serve as both a physical landmark and a storytelling portal. Through augmented reality (AR), visitors will be able to scan the manholes and unlock short films that share each player’s journey—
from their earliest days in baseball to their rise to the Major Leagues. Additional editorial content will be available on MLB.jp, providing further insight into the players’ paths and the communities that helped shape them.
This campaign is a tribute to the depth and breadth of Japanese talent in the modern game, giving us more evidence that baseball is something else. A tip of the cap goes out to my entire team on MLB: 👏👏👏
