A closer look at Grandiose Schutzmantel Borderline by Shannon Bool. In February, we celebrated the installation of this spectacular work at Oxford’s 1021 West Hastings Street lobby. It is a visually and technically stunning work that she created specifically for this space, combining jacquard weaving with hand embroidery to bring a digital photo collage to life in the form of a monumental tapestry.
In her practice, Bool combines art historical and architectural references with an interest in psychoanalytic concepts, creating work with mediums and techniques such as tapestry, embroidery, carpet, silk paintings, and photograms. Central to her practice are questions of the gaze: Who is looking at what, from what context, and to what end? She integrates these questions with material processes that seek to pivot the viewer’s perspective in new ways, often subverting hierarchies of material value by using materials associated with craft.
Thank you to Shannon for traveling from Berlin to be with us for the installation and celebration, and thank you to the visionary team at Oxford for working with us on this project!

For Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, Daniel Faria Gallery is pleased to present works by Shannon Bool, Stephanie Comilang and Simon Speiser. The presented artists fuse analogue processes with digital technologies, creating works that contend with historical and cultural narratives, including colonial trade routes, diasporic exchanges, the modernist canon of architecture, and the preservation of traditional knowledge through materials and forms.
