If you’re a reporter who wants to better cover summer learning this year, apply for EWA’s Summer School Cohort!
Many students will disperse to summer learning programs after their academic year ends. And summertime is ripe for reporting.
- Are students attending programs that meet the recommendations for effective summer learning?
- What are schools and organizations doing to ensure students can access programs and to encourage their attendance during summer break?
- And in states that have increased funding for summer school, are those investments paying off?
Reporters will meet and learn from national experts and fellow journalists during one week in May. Use the link in EWA’s profile bio to apply.
The deadline is Friday, May 1.

In the past year, universities have announced hiring freezes, layoffs, program cuts and other financial cutbacks. While some cost reductions have come as a result of recent federal funding changes, state laws and investigatory threats, many are being driven by ongoing issues, including the college enrollment cliff and state budget cuts.
Many colleges have closed in recent years. What are the early warning signs reporters should look for? What historical context should journalists incorporate while covering these changes? What tools can reporters utilize for breaking news and enterprise coverage of the college financial landscape?
Join the Education Writers Association’s webinar on Wednesday, March 25 at 1 p.m. Eastern to get answers. In an interactive webinar, attendees will hear from:
- Brendan Cantwell, professor, Michigan State University
- Ben Unglesbee, senior reporter, Higher Ed Dive (facilitator)
Register using the link in EWA’s bio.

James S. Murphy, senior fellow at the nonprofit Class Action, shared advice for this social post about new research on the impact of the end of race-conscious college admissions.
Using newly released federal data on more than 3,000 colleges and universities and more than 3 million students, Class Action recently released a research report, “The Future of Fair Admissions,” which examined student enrollment before and after the 2023 Supreme Court decision that ended race-conscious college admissions and analyzed the immediate impacts.
The research found that diversity has decreased notably at elite schools but has increased at many others.
“As expected, the end of affirmative action had a significant impact on the most selective private universities and colleges, but its effects could be seen across the entire admissions ecosystem,” Murphy said. “One of the most notable outcomes was an increase in Black and/or Latino freshman enrollment at more than 80% of state flagships.”
Check out the slides to see what Murphy suggests. He also recommends reviewing Class Action’s enrollment dashboard, which you can access using the link in bio.
