I often imagine traversing through my mind as if it were a strange landscape littered with fragments of images. We often encounter pictures and thoughts that aren't ours yet these seemingly harmless bits of information often leave a memory that doesn't necessarily resonate with our own values. I look at them as mental markers to help me navigate through expeditions inside my own head.

Precarious reflects on polarization and the enduring regionalism within the Filipino identity. The central figure holds a lamp with a flaming heart — a symbol of passion and knowledge reminiscent of Prometheus’s gift of fire — questioning how access to information has not led to collective discernment. The floating island signifies detachment from a broader national awareness, while tentacles rising from the water evoke external influences that deepen division. The kilometer zero marker stands as a reminder of a nation stalled, fragmented, and struggling toward unity.
Island Monkey critiques the Filipino pack mentality, drawing from an old Indian fable of trust and betrayal. The monkey’s elongated tail symbolizes society’s failure to learn and evolve, while the inverted telescope alludes to a system that provides tools without true understanding. Through this imagery, the work confronts corruption, complacency, and the fragile sense of nationhood that leaves the collective adrift.

Edrick Daniel delves into the complexities of Filipino identity, employing a nuanced visual language to explore the tensions and contradictions inherent in the quest for a coherent sense of nationhood. In a nation grappling with post-colonial narratives and conflicting definitions of identity, Daniel’s work becomes a reflection on the struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people.
Â
His exploration begins with a desire for a tangible and well-defined concept of the Philippines, a collective history that transcends post-colonial influences. The artist navigates this longing through both tentative and bold strokes, probing questions of autonomy, sovereignty, and nationhood. In essence, Daniel’s art becomes a visual discourse on the multifaceted nature of Filipino identity, grappling with historical influences, post-colonial struggles, and the evolving complexities of contemporary life. His paintings serve as a mirror to the introspective journey of a nation seeking to define itself amidst a backdrop of contradictions.
