Members of Alberta’s ruling United Conservative Party approved a resolution calling for a requirement that teachers, schools and school boards get written consent from parents before using chosen names and pronouns of students Saturday. “Regardless of how often the extreme left undermines the role of parents, I want you to know that parental rights and choice in your child’s education is and will continue to be a fundamental core principle of this party and this government, and we will never apologize for it,” said Smith. However, speaking to reporters, Smith was non-committal about bringing forward legislation like that seen in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick that will require teachers and schools to get parental consent before allowing students under the age of 16 to change their names or pronouns. [LINK IN BIO] It’s been a few months to remember for CFB Edmonton’s Lt.-Col. Kurt Grimsrud. He’ll be on a plane back to Alberta next week after wrapping up his deployment as task force commander for Rotation 15 on Operation Unifier, the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) military training and capacity building mission in support of Ukraine’s military and its battle against the Russian invaders. “It’s been a tremendous honour,” Grimsrud told Postmedia in an interview from Poland early Tuesday. “Actually being able to be involved in world events where you’re engaged with the Ukrainians helping them in their fight for their own sovereignty, their freedom and their independence, it’s been a very fulfilling task.” Grimsrud, a two-decade CAF veteran from Regina, has been overseeing the more than 300 Canadian personnel leading training efforts across five missions taking place in the United Kingdom and Latvia as well as in Poland. It’s been what he described as “a pretty incredible mission” for him and his troops, but their minds are never far from those who they are preparing for battle. “We’ve seen dedication. We’ve seen a lot of commitment … they train hard. They pay attention. They listen,” he said of the Ukrainians.

[LINK IN BIO] To many, Matthew de Grood is a savvy mass killer, author of one of Calgary’s worst tragedies, who managed to escape prison by claiming mental illness. Susan de Grood knows the immense pain and sorrow her son caused. But she insists: “if you know Matthew, he’s not the monster people like to believe he was.” “Mental illness hit him hard,” she said. “But he has recovered. That’s the most important part — that he has recovered. He’s very remorseful and cognizant of what he needs to do to keep himself in that position.” Article content “It was an undiagnosed mental illness, and nobody knew.” In their first interview since Matthew fatally stabbed five people at a house party in 2014, Susan and her husband Douglas are speaking out about the case that made them one of the most infamous families in Calgary. Their decision to speak publicly comes after a court ruling dismissing claims of political bias on the part of the Alberta Review Board, which has governed Matthew’s fate since the 2016 court ruling finding him not criminally responsible (NCR) for the murders of Lawrence Hong, Joshua Hunter, Kaitlin Perras, Zackariah Rathwell and Jordan Segura. Matthew is currently living in a group home in Edmonton under 24-hour supervision after the review board deemed him a “significant” threat to public safety. #yeg #yeggers #calgary #homicide #crime #justicesystem #alberta #news #newspaper #edmonton

[LINK IN BIO] City officials ordered two Downtown public water fountains be disconnected ahead of a heat wave last weekend because of complaints from the police and library staff, shedding light on how Edmonton navigates conflicts around impoverished people’s basic needs and demands by others to tackle social disorder and safety concerns. Epcor cut off the water supply from the fire hydrants at the city’s request last Thursday. The weekend after the bottle filling stations at 96 Street near Bissell Centre West and 100 Street outside Stanley A. Milner Library were removed, temperatures were so hot Environment Canada warned the public to take precautions because of the heat. The City of Edmonton, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) say there were safety concerns for staff and the public about the two fountains. By Wednesday, both had been relocated with signs directing users from former locations to one at 102A Avenue north of Churchill Square and the other at 105A Avenue west of 96 Street. #Edmonton #Yeg #yegdt #yeggers #mayorsohi #yegcc #yegmayor #homeless #cityofedmonton #news #newspaper
