Magnus' Adoption Story ❤️ When Danielle and their family showed up at the Edmonton Humane Society in January 2017, they were still healing from the loss of one of their resident kitties, but felt a pull to go and see if they could potentially find another match. "We lost our Mitsy months before and we, and our other cat, were very sad," Danielle remembers. "We wanted to give our love to another animal and give them the best life possible!" 🥰 The family took their time visiting with each of the available felines, but it didn't seem as though they were going to make the connection they were hoping to. "We walked through and visited the cats but none of them chose us," Danielle says. But just as they were about to leave, fate intervened ✨ "We were walking out and forgot about one of the rooms. We walked in and there he was. As soon as we saw him, we knew he was the one. He was the only one left from the litter there. The rest is history!" Danielle tells us. Now, Magnus has settled into his new home and it's as if he was always a part of the family 🏠 "He tells me when it's treat time and supper time, even when I sleep in on the weekend. He howls like a dog and he gets insulted when you close the bathroom door," Danielle laughs. A significant and long-awaited milestone for animal welfare in Alberta 🐾 Updates to Alberta’s Animal Protection Act (APA) have now received Royal Assent, after more than two decades without change. The updated legislation introduces more modern standards of care, reflects advancements in animal welfare science, and strengthens the tools available to support earlier and more effective intervention. This progress reflects the contributions of many, including government, enforcement agencies, organizations across the animal welfare sector and community members who have advocated for stronger protections for animals. As implementation begins, our attention will now turn to how these changes are applied in practice across Alberta, including the development of supporting regulations. Oooh, I can't resist a good roll through the grass 😋 My name's Davidson (147237). I'm a seven-year-old distinguished gentleman looking for a place to spend my golden years. As a senior, I still like my walks, but prefer a slower pace now. Every rock must be sniffed, every front lawn must be investigated — I want to see it all. I do really well on a leash, which will make our leisurely strolls a breeze ☀️ I've learned a few things during my lifetime, including where to potty (outside, I know 😉), how to sit for some tasty treats and probably most importantly, how to relax and cuddle with my favourite people ❤️ When I came to EHS, I needed a little bit of medical care. The veterinary team found a lump that needed to be removed, and after doing some more testing, discovered the cells were cancerous. But I'm a strong guy, and once I healed up from my surgery, I was given the all-clear. Now, I'm finally feeling like my true self! While I'm cancer-free right now, it's important for my future family to keep an eye on any changes in my health with regular vet visits, so I can continue to live my best life. The adoptions team here at the shelter would be happy to chat more about my ongoing care and what that may look like. This is my best friend, Felix (147242) ❤️ Together, we are a bonded duo of delightful felines looking for a home that would appreciate days filled with double the love 🥰 At two years old, we come with our own established personalities. For instance, I am definitely the more social of the pair of us — I love to follow my people around and watch closely as they do house work, only demanding a little bit of attention from time to time for a quick chat and some pets. Felix, on the other hand, is more of the laid-back, quiet type. He prefers to observe from a distance before deciding he's comfortable enough to approach for a few chin scratches 🐱 Together, we create the purr-fect balance! 😴... Oh! Who's there? I was just enjoying a little mid-afternoon nap. But I'll happily take a little break to say hello to you. I'm Zora (147206), a shy three-month-old Australian cattle dog mixed girly looking for my perfect home 🏠 As I'm still just a baby, I'm learning all about the big wide world, including what I like and don't like. For example, I LOVE treats, gentle voices and predictable routines. I'm not so fond of new experiences and sounds — but I'm learning to be brave and seeing that new things can be good things ❤️ My foster home has been especially encouraging when it comes to raising my confidence. I'd love to continue working on my skills with my new family, and luckily there are some awesome training classes here at EHS that we can take together — not only to build our bond, but to help me become the best girl I can be! 😊 If you've already got a pup in your household, that's another great way for me to learn the ropes. I enjoy receiving pets and chilling out with you on the couch or your lap as you work from home 🏠 I'm also okay with other kitty friends. It's been reported that I'm 'unbothered' in the presence of other resident cats. This week, we’re switching up our Feel Good Friday post with a foster-focused edition: Feel Good Foster Friday! ❤️ Every day, and especially while our adoption gallery is under renovation, foster volunteers help us maintain capacity and support animals in our care. From day trips to sleepovers and weekend getaways, even a short break from the shelter can have a huge impact. Today’s story is all about Martin — a goofy three-year-old Labrador mix who has since found his new home 👑🏡 But before his adoption, Martin spent some time in foster to help decompress, and that journey made all the difference. While in our care, Martin headed out on a foster day trip with amazing volunteers, Ella and David, who described him as “a very happy boy.” During his adventure, they discovered he was a great car companion, an even better snuggler and the proud owner of a hilarious “rib scratch dance” that never failed to make them laugh. When asked what they’d say to someone unsure about fostering, Ella and David kept it simple: "Try it. Take a dog for a walk on a sunny day!” ☀️ Martin is now living the good life full-time — snuggling all day like the king he is. His only complaint? His new guardians say he was apparently hoping for prime rib as his dinner, but he got sirloin instead 🥩😂 Fostering changes lives, even if it’s just for a day. Yes, it's me — Essie (147153). You've probably heard all about me, because how could a girl this cute not be the talk of the town? 💜 But just in case you need a little refresher, let me give you the 411. I'm a five-year old great dane mix with a laid-back personality, but still love a good walk and some play time, of course. I really just like being wherever my people are 😍 If you're looking for a gal with beauty and brains, I'm happy to report that I'm fully house-trained, know a few tricks and am very food-motivated — which means any further training we do should be a breeze 😊 I came to EHS after a bit of a rough start and needed some love and TLC to help me get healthy again. The wonderful teams here at the shelter, as well as my foster home, made sure I received the care I needed so I could start my journey to finding my perfect home. And speaking of my perfect home, my ideal family will include older children and adults who can give me the time and space I need to get comfortable in my new environment, as I can be a little unsure in unfamiliar situations 🏠 I also need a household free of small dogs — but bigger canine companions might be ok, as long as we meet and make sure we're a match. As a bonus, EHS' Clear the Shelter Adoption Days are on until May 10, which includes reduced adoption fees and 30% off training classes for pups like me! As you can probably guess, I'm an easygoing feline who prefers the quieter things in life: curling up in cozy spots, finding a warm sunbeam and taking in some birdwatching 🐦 I don't ask for a lot, a few scratches here and there, maybe. My foster says I'm a pretty independent kitty who does a good job of entertaining himself. I'm just patiently waiting for you to come throw my favourite green ball... 👀 I'm Guinevere (147151), a six-year-old border collie cross looking for a home where I can settle down for my golden years. As you can see, I love to play fetch! I'll sit here with my ball or toy until you come throw it for me. If I'm not a shining example that age is just a number, I don't know what is 🥎🐕 When I'm not getting outside for my daily walk or partaking in some playtime, you can find me on the couch, belly-up, waiting for some much-deserved rubs 🫶 I thoroughly enjoy being around my people, and will gladly snuggle up with you after a long day. I do have a tendency to be a bit shy and nervous with new people, but once I get comfortable and learn they're safe, we become the best of friends! Earl's Adoption Story ❤️ On January 2, 2026, two-year-old Earl had no idea his life was about to change for the better. But that's exactly what happened when Sophya and her family walked through the door of EHS' cat gallery that day. Sophya found that most people visiting the shelter were drawn to the tiny kittens — but not her. She immediately felt connected to Earl 🫶 "The moment we saw his sweet face, everything changed. It truly felt like he chose us," Sophya remembers. "He was so friendly right away, purring and asking for love. Bringing him home was a little scary for him at first, but he opened up to us almost immediately. Since then, he has filled our home with so much love." Sophya's son gave the handsome kitty his name (which was formerly Oliver), and it has fit him like a glove. "He truly lives up to that name — full of personality and affection. He has settled in beautifully and has so much love to give," she tells us 🥰 Earl is truly living his best life in his purr-fect home, surrounded by people who have loved him from the moment they laid eyes on him. And his family couldn't be happier with their choice to add a new furry family member to their household 🐈 "Earl’s soul is so precious, and we feel so lucky to have him. I truly believe he’s just as happy with us as we are with him," says Sophya.
