The sky was ablaze with colour as the sun gods unleashed their power, as if armed with a kaleidoscopic fire thrower. May 10/11, 2024 Swipe for timelapse. #raw_ireland #bestofirish #thefullirish #rteweather #sligo #darkskyshare

Mystical Sligo under the Aurora Borealis 10/11 May 2024. A magic night when this pale blue dot became a lot more colourful. I started at Killaspugbrone, an 11th century Christian monastery and graveyard, marveled at the aurora over Knocknarea and Strandhill and finally went up the Benbulben forest walk to see Big Ben shrouded in the lights just before dawn. #sligo #sligotourism #killaspugbrone #strandhill #knocknarea #timelapse #auroraborealis #auroratimelapse #lrtimelapse #wildatlanticway #sligoireland @thecanopysligo @sligoliveinvestvisit @theolllam @joe_dart @sligo.walks @sligocountycouncil

It’s always pleasing when clients send me photos of my working hanging in far flung places. This 5ft canvas of the Galactic Chieftain panorama printed by @pictoremdecor is on a California wall. I can now print and ship canvases using superb professional printing services within Canada and USA to avoid international shipping charges. DM me for more info. #landscape_captures #wildatlanticway #sligoliveinvestvisit #irishphotographer

Milky Way panorama over Lough Allen last Saturday…. Really weird this one, when it came to editing. The colours were all over the place! Really green airglow mixed with yellow light pollution to the south, and a pink aurora to the north - Also didn’t have time to collect much data, because of the narrow window of total darkness - so no matter what I do it looks unnatural! But I guess that’s what the universe sent us on that beautiful clear Leitrim night so I’m good with that! Shoutout to @blair_adamson_photography for the inspo to get out shooting Astro again. First time out shooting Astro in an age, last Saturday after midnight Blair (thanks for getting me out shooting again Blair!) @blair_adamson_photography and I headed to Lough Allen. Unfortunately our first favoured location Spencer Harbour has been lit up like a Christmas tree by @leitrimcountycouncil , making Astro shooting impossible. Why such power wastage and light pollution at 1am, guys?! Anyway we found a lakeside spot near an old monastery down the road and it was a great stargazing spot. Not much darkness left at this time of year - just an hour of total darkness really - but managed to grab a few nice shots. Panorama to follow hopefully! yes the dry robe came in handy - so toasty on a very chilly May night! #leitrimtourism #astrophoto #loughallen #dryrobe

2 years ago today we were in the midst of the most amazing G5 super aurora storm. North south east and west we were given a lesson as to how the power of the sun makes itself felt even when it’s not visible. #sligoliveinvestvisit #auroraborealis

Stunning morning light greets me most mornings as I walk the dogs in Cairns wood. An added bonus is the many wonderful bird sounds - in the past few days I’ve heard Chiffchaffs, Jays, Blackcaps and all the usual woodland critters too like Song Thrush, Blackbirds Wrens Robins and Tits. A lovely mindful way to start the day. #sligowalks @irishwildlifesounds

Aurora Borealis over Glenade Lake, County Leitrim giving the impression of calm presence in this otherwise wild landscape. this valley has so much legend attached to it including that of the “water hound” or Dobhar-cú. The Dobhar-cú of Glenade Lake A water hound of Irish legend. When Mrs. Mac Loughlin went to fetch water from the lake one morning, she didn’t return. Her husband found her dead on the shore, the Dobhar-cú nearby. He killed the beast, but with its dying breath it whistled through its tail—summoning another from the depths. The second hound chased Mac Loughlin for miles until, at Ballintrellick, it leapt through his horse’s side. Mrs. Mac Loughlin lies in Conwell graveyard still, her gravestone carved with the creature she met at the water’s edge. #AuroraBorealis #IrishFolklore #Dobharcú #GlenadeLake #DarkTourismIreland CelticMythology NorthernLights Leitrim IrishLegends NightPhotography FolkloreFriday HauntedIreland WildAtlanticWay

Long ago there lived in the townland of Crumpawn a man-whom the local people called liaigh. His wife, growing jealous of her husband, thought to put an end to his life. One day she boiled the flesh of a poisonous reptile which she got in the lake and gave it to him to eat. As he lay dying, she felt not a little remorse for what she had done. He, seeing her distress, and realizing the reason of it, told her that if she would sit naked on a cold stone for some hours he would recover. She did so and died after some hours. He recovered and married again, and lived happily ever afterwards. Since then this valley has been called Glenade which means the Glen of Jealously. (Courtesy Duchas.ie) #leitrim

SOLAR MIDNIGHT 🕛Yes - The sun shows its power even more beautifully at night. It transforms our world even when we can’t see it. No wonder ancients worshipped it. Ever wonder what ancient people made of the Northern Lights? It’s something that preoccupies me. It’s got to be represented in myth and legend. If you know of any myths or legends that could have described the Aurora borealis leave a comment! Glenade Lough under the Aurora 20/21 Mar 2026. Beautiful calm Glenade Lough under last night’s Aurora. Locations don’t get much better. This was taken just as @blair_adamson_photography joined me in witnessing the spectacle #leitrim @enjoyleitrim @leitrimtourism

What a crazy day yesterday. After spending 2 days in Dublin with the amazing people at @artscouncilireland @improvisedmusic @jazzireland and a host of amazing Irish & European jazz presenters, I got off the train last night in Sligo to an aurora alert. What could I do but head straight out under clear skies and grab some of the beauty of lady aurora. This is the first shot I took as I landed at Glenade Lough. It was so peaceful but very cold and I was in such a rush to get out that I forgot to wear appropriate footwear so my feet were like blocks of ice all night. Worth it though! #aurora #glenade #leitrim #astrophoto
