@tamirhasacellphone and I spent a big chuck of February & March charting the trauma & healing of two of the brave survivors of the Uvalde shooting. The story finally ran today (also on the front page). I can’t thank enough the families of Noah & Mayah (Oscar Orona Jessica Diaz-Orona/ Ruben Zamora Sr. Christina Graciano Zamora )for their willingness to open their doors to me & my colleague, photographer Tamir Kalifa. Please take a moment to read & understand their difficult, but ultimately hopeful journey. #uvalde #uvaldestrong #uvaldeschoolshooting @nytimes

I was there when the crowd went wild when the three Gámez-Cuéllar brothers and their father took the stage. Two months ago, the musicians were being held in federal immigration detention centers. Now, they were opening for @spaceykacey Photos by @theotherchrislee /2026/05/03/us/mariachi-brothers-ice-kacey-musgraves-texas.html?unlocked_article_code=1.f1A.R-YI.6spb0I_86sg3&smid=nytcore-ios-share

Saturday’s print version of The @nytimes Olivia Cruz hopped carefully off a bus in an upscale San Antonio enclave framed by oak-lined streets. On a recent day in April, Ms. Cruz brushed off a leg injury with the help of a new cane and tried to focus on the $120 payday needed to cover the rising cost of raising two grandchildren. “You go to the grocery store to buy meat or vegetables, and the bill comes up to more than $100,” said Ms. Cruz, 68, as she limped toward her client’s home to clean. “I’ve been poor for as long as I can remember, but it feels like it is harder to be poor these days.” /2026/04/29/us/san-antonio-texas-poverty-rate-census.html?unlocked_article_code=1.elA.rKt2.x4juMNHlbU2V&smid=nytcore-ios-share

So happy to see my good friend @lareportera , Jazmine Ulloa, launch her book, El Paso, into the world. I remember first meeting her in 2009 or 2010 when she was a cub reporter for The Brownsville Herald and we were both at the Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe Mass and procession, on the job. Now she is a New York Times national correspondent, along with another dear friend, @edjsandoval , who I’ve know since we were newspaper interns. And I’m occasionally writing for The New York Times Magazine. These border kids got somewhere! Just as proud to hear @selizondogriest also present her book, Art Above Everything, at the San Antonio Book Festival. No photographic evidence of us together, but trust that we had delicious food and hours of deep conversation, our usual MO. It was a life-giving weekend with writer and journalist friends who remind me why we do what we do.
