The South African Guild of Editors (SAGE) recently held a special event to honor the memory of the late Leon Visser and officially bestow upon him the SAGE Acronym – our guild’s highest professional recognition, awarded for sustained excellence and a meaningful contribution to our craft. We were honored to have his partner, Terry, join us on April 16th to accept the certificate on his behalf. Leon wasn’t just a talented editor with an unmistakable passion for storytelling. He was also dedicated to mentorship, advice, and giving back to the South African editing community. Rest in peace, Leon Visser, S.A.G.E.

Acronym Award for Leon Visser The South African Guild of Editors (SAGE) shares, with both heavy hearts and great pride, that the late Leon Visser, an award-winning film and television editor, was awarded the Guild’s highest honour, the SAGE Acronym. Following the completion of the 2025 judging process, Leon was informed of this recognition during his lifetime. SAGE now publicly announces this recognition and pays tribute to a gifted editor, dedicated mentor, and beloved member of the South African editing community. The Acronym recognises excellence and significant contributions to the art of editing, and the sustained commitment to mentorship and upholding the values of the profession. The selection process is rigorous and peer-driven and set on international best practice, and conducted by a committee of Acronym holders. Applications are evaluated on a consistent body of high-quality work across respected film festivals and platforms, the applicant's advocacy for strong professional practices, and meaningful engagement with the Guild’s mission. Leon’s submission was received and adjudicated in the 2025 application call. It had been our hope to celebrate this honour with him at an in-person ceremony. With respect and care for his family and friends, SAGE now wishes to share this announcement publicly. We are grateful that he was able to receive this recognition and celebrate it. On receiving the news, Leon responded with characteristic humility: “Wow, thank you so much for this. I am really honoured. As stated in my application, my dedication will keep growing the more my health recovers.” Leon exemplified the Acronym’s qualities in every respect. With a career spanning more than 19 years, he built a remarkable and wide-ranging body of work across narrative feature films, television series, short films, and long-form documentaries. The Acronym committee was deeply moved by the clarity, depth and thoughtfulness with which he spoke about his editing process with an unmistakable passion for storytelling that ran throughout his submission.

SAGE presents: Shaping Story Through Sound What if sound wasn’t the final layer, but part of the story from the very beginning? Sound is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in the edit suite, yet it is often treated as an afterthought. This session explores how editors can think about sound creatively from the earliest stages of a project and how collaboration with sound designers and composers can elevate story, emotion, and rhythm. Join panellists: • Leon Gerber - Film & Television Editor | Senior Documentary Editor • Markus Wormstorm - Music Producer | Film Composer • Siyabonga Sithole - Score Composer | Sound Effects Editor | Audio Assistant • Fezile Thela - Film Composer | Music Producer | Post-Production Sound Editor Together, they will unpack how sound shapes narrative intention across documentary and fiction work, and how editors can approach collaboration with clarity and confidence. 17 March 2026 19:00 – 21:00 🌍 Online Go to the Eventbrite link in bio to register. #SAGE #Editors #SoundDesign #FilmCommunity #PostProduction #CreativeCollaboration
