When you hear the words 'Elk Island homestead', you probably won't picture this warmly decorated, eclectic home. Of the original building, "It was far worse than I remembered. I came home and I cried," says Shweta. But the Hannemans left their downtown loft for the country, having already spent time thinking about what it could look like — and stayed in Nate's parents' basement while they worked with local contractors to make their home feel like an extensions of themselves. WATCH out! Watch enthusiasm is on the rise. We are surrounded by digital clocks that give us the time with atomic precision, but a watch itself is something else: a functional piece of art that doesn’t need a software update. These timepieces set themselves apart. From a watch that uses a genuine piece of meteorite to linen-looking unisex designs, the styles are personal and the craftsmanship is time-tested. Zaki Hirabe lives his father's legacy every day — as a volunteer, in his work with Edmonton Public Schools and with Edmonton Police Service Chief’s Community Council. Service isn't a choice — it's who he is. His community work is a 24/7 commitment, advocating for others and representing youth in need. “If you don’t invite yourself to the table, then no one’s going to hear your voice,” he says. Discover what makes him this year's Emerging Leader in our April issue. It's more than a collection of art — it's a community that invites the city in. Through Catherine Crowston's leadership as executive director and chief curator at the Art Gallery of Alberta, the gallery is opening its doors to other local arts organizations and dismantling barriers that might stop people from exploring galleries and museums. Her vision is one of inviting folks in. “Sometimes people think museums and art galleries are precious or elitist,” she says. “I want people to know that artwork is open to interpretation. People can come in and create their own meaning." Find out what makes Catherine Crowston this year's Arts Leader in Edify's April issue. As "director of fun" with Edmonton Riverhawks, Steve Hogle helps plan those theme nights you've all heard about, like on Canada Day, when the team hosts a citizenship ceremony on the field before the game. “I want to show newcomers that they are welcome, I want to thank them for choosing Canada," Hogle says. He's a citizen champion in our city. Read about this year's Edifiers in the April issue of Edify. From a powerpoint presentation delivered in a basement to 10 friends, to having 500 local members and 1,000 national members, the Sifarish Network is fulfilling its goal of being a "community concierge". Enter Raj Malhotra and Sunny Kakar, long-time school friends and distant relations who noted a general loss of personal connection and built a non-profit to foster community with winter festivals, helping seniors, leadership activities, peer-to-peer networking groups and much more.
