I have pushed myself beyond exhaustion to become nothing like you - I swam against the current of your decisions as if each one were a riptide I had to outlast to escape the wreckage you left behind.
I have witnessed misery prowl through our name like a storm without mercy, its tides washing away every wall we tried to raise to protect ourselves, its brutal wind tearing the roofs from our false joy, and its flood seeping into every last hope until our lives sank beneath its endless waves. We have never known calm waters; we were born from the fragments left after the storm, and all we have ever known is drowning.
Yet I try, and try so tirelessly, to pull myself out of this water, dragging myself forward until I am left gasping for air, until my skin blisters beneath the scorching sun. With salt seeping into my wounds like a sentence handed down for the crime of simply existing, I forge myself forward to escape these trenches; each heave was offered like a desperate prayer to a false god.
I have taught myself to brave the cold, to wrap my own shoulders that ache for holding, to press my palms against my chest - to feel for a pulse and to survive this current that continuously pulls me toward oblivion.
Still, despite every frantic stroke, a quiet terror lingers within me, whispering that no matter how fiercely I swim, I am bound to the same storm.
