Flashback Friday, 1998, under the sign of #222sf. This is Art Richards, a very sweet gentleman who started getting tattooed in his 70s after his wife had passed and he had retired, and instead of disappearing into the soft room of old age, he stepped into the buzz and began another life in plain sight. It was pure joy to be part of his tattoo journey. We pretty much built him a full bodysuit, with a few exceptions, one sitting at a time, him showing up calm, kind, brave, lit from somewhere deep, like the door had opened and he had no interest in asking permission from time. That is the church of it for me. Not trend. Not costume. Not the little marketplace of opinion. A person choosing the mark, choosing the pain, choosing me to help carry it into form, choosing to become more fully visible while the world expected him to fade. Thank you, Art. Close enough to home to feel possible, far enough that I can’t run back every time life yells my name, which is probably good for focus and slightly inconvenient for my lifelong fantasy of being everywhere for everyone, especially the sacred 3pm pickup. So here’s the little riddle: Ventura keeps calling, home keeps calling, tattoo keeps calling, and I keep answering all three like a man with one phone and too many gods on the line. Last night @the_ink_house the room did the old trick, the flash came out, the air got weird, the signal started humming, and he said he wanted to pick something straight from the sheets. Two pages in, barely two, and there it was, the one from 2019, staring back like it had been waiting in the dark with its teeth showing. He saw it and knew. No committee. No fear parade. No overthinking the sacred crime. He picked it the second it hit him and I was lit up proper because that one has history in its bones. Made in 2019, born once on paper, then built again in three dimensions like some strange little altar object, and then fire took that version clean off the earth forever. Gone. Ash. Ghost food. But last night it crawled back through the door and chose a new body. That is the part I love. Tattoo does not die easy. It hides in paper, in memory, in the hand, in the eye of the one who knows when they know. The burned thing returns. The lost thing gets skin. The old flash becomes now. This one lives on. Yesterday was a full day in the house of ink and weather and Ventura light @the_ink_house , and somewhere in the middle of the motion one of the crew @valadeztattoo stepped into the chair with the recipe in her hand and the door open in her arm, so I took the sharpie and followed the little thunder trail, drew it on right there, cooked it while it was still alive, no overthinking, no committee, just trust entering the room and turning into color. All her arms living in black and grey, so when she said wild color I heard the bell under the floorboards ring and we went bright, we went strange, we went where the tattoo wanted to go.
