I know I have a bias but the Toronto Public Library 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 system is the best in the world. Walked into the Riverdale Branch today and saw this display right at the front with Shilpi Somaya Gowda's audio book on display and a poster highlighting Mansi Shah, Noreen Nanja, Souvankham Thammavongsa, Rachel Phan, Eddy Boudel Tan, Farah Ghafoor, Uzma Jalaluddin, Liann Zhang, and many other talented Asian heritage writers! What a treat to have access to all of these books and so many more. And they even started opening on Sundays recently. #bookrecommendations #SouthAsianAuthors #Bookstagram #DiverseVoices #asianheritagemonth

THE REBELLIOUS TIDE by Eddy Boudel Tan 3.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ cw: assault, sexual harassment, human trafficking When twenty-nine-year-old Sebastian’s mother dies after years of illness and a lifetime of poverty, he leaves Quebec and joins the crew of a Mediterranean cruise ship as their photographer. He is searching for his father, who left his mother before Sebastian was born, and who he discovered is one of the ship’s captains. Already angry at this man for abandoning him and his mother, Sebastian leads a massive revolt in the cabin crew when he sees his father’s dictator-like way of running the ship. Tensions rise, a class war emerges, and Sebastian makes a discovery about the Glacier that could ruin the entire crew.  I flew through the audiobook for this on some longer commutes earlier this month and really enjoyed the pacing of the story, as once the action started it never seemed to stop. SPOILER: I was not expecting Sebastian to discover the ship was a human trafficking ring, but that especially made for a very tense second half! As a lover of Greek mythology, I felt some of the references and symbols in this book to be a bit too on the nose, and the ending was rushed with too little explanation of where all our side characters - so heavily featured throughout the story - ended up. However, I enjoyed this more than I can critique it, so it gets a spot on the ‘gram.  #TheRebelliousTide #CurrentlyReading #Bookstagram #Book2Baker #MiksPicks

I'm a day late for #BCBookDay, but I wanted to highlight this author and novel, one of my recent favourites. Eddy Boudel Tan had not been on my radar at all until the book club I'm in chose to read The Tiger and The Cosmonaut, and am I ever glad they did because, damn, I love this book. I actually read it twice before our meeting and picked up on so many little details the second time around which elevated the story that much more for me. I was completely captivated by this story from page one, following Casper as he returns to his familial home after his father goes missing, uncovering details of his past, addressing generational traumas, racial and homophobic prejudices, reconnecting with his family and finding himself. Eddy Boudel Tan writes a beautiful story, full of some of the most charming descriptions I've ever read, which had me really invested in the story and what happened to each of the characters. I've seen some reviewers take issues with the believability of certain plot points, but for me the story worked, and wrapped up in a very satisfying manner. I can't wait to check out some more of of this authors stories. 5 cosmonauts out of 5 🧑‍🚀🧑‍🚀🧑‍🚀🧑‍🚀🧑‍🚀
