It’s had been a beautiful day for doing a butterfly survey at the Wilderness Centre in the Forest of Dean; amongst the expected orange tips and green-veined whites I also had a grizzled skipper. The conservation grazing here is really paying off. #conservationgrazing #wilding #butterflies #wildernesscentre

Introducing to you Ed Drewitt, next in our Meet Your Adventurer series! Ed, who runs the dusk wildlife safaris here at Penhein, has been a lifelong lover of wildlife. Since the age of seven this love was nurtured and encouraged by those around him. Fast forward to adult life, Ed’s passion started to become his career when he studied zoology at the University of Bristol. Since then Ed has worked with schools and other places of learning, engaging with students through the use of museum objects, dinosaurs, fossil hunting and wildlife. Today Ed works as a freelance naturalist, working on a range of projects from wildlife surveys to training and developing learning resources. Ed also hosts guided wildlife walks, where he utilises a special device - a Birdpen - that plays the sounds of different birds so listeners can learn how to single out particular bird songs. When asked about why he loves what he does, this is what Ed shared with us. ”I love the opportunity to help others be away from technology and the grind of everyday life, to be transported into a world of nature. It also keeps me healthy, active and mindful - keeping me away from my desk! “It allows me to be aware of the changes in nature that happen daily and to pass this on to others who may only be getting a snapshot of what is happening, especially during the spring and summer. At Penhein the interconnecting hedgerows adjoining ancient woodland provide an ideal opportunity to look and listen for birdlife that lives here, while looking for tracks and trails of mammals that mostly come out at night. “By stopping and starting, looking and listening, we all get the opportunity to pause and unravel all the mass of sounds and to hear individual birds, insects and other wildlife.” For more information please visit our website Penehein.co.uk - Things to do - Adventures at Penhein. Please note that these activities are only available to book for guests staying at Penhein. To learn more about Ed’s work, visit his Instagram @eddrewitt1 Or Facebook page Ed Drewitt, naturalist and wildlife detective

A few weeks ago I was surveying for birds using a willow plantation in Devon and a miscanthus (elephant grass) plantation in Somerset. Some surprises including over 1,000 pied wagtails roosting in the miscanthus. I'll be talking more about the wildlife that uses these plantations for Biomass Connect on the 18th Jan, 4pm, biomassconnect.org
