Here’s another bunch of images from ROME by @katieparla . There were just too many for one post. 🫠 This is late, but Katie’s still out there (somewhere) on her book tour! As for me, I’ll see you @omnivorebooks in January!
OK, this is SUPER belated - 😬🫣 - but I’m truly blown away by ROME, the latest (and maybe greatest?) from @katieparla . Also, the design by @iadingman is truly 🤌. This was shot over two trips to Rome, totaling over 1,600 images and nearly 3 weeks of walking, Ubering, Lime biking (I said no to scooters) all over, and slightly outside, The Eternal City. Each day was a rapid fire masterclass in food, wine, art, architecture, history (so much history), and AMAZING PEOPLE - and learning to navigate it all like a local. There was generally a daily pivot/improv when something went completely sideways… which is also how you know you’re in Italy. ❤️ I’m so grateful to be part of this team.
It’s PUB DAY for THE PASTA BOOK! Huge thanks to @marcvetri and @davejoachim for having me along on one more. So much technique and so many ideas. Can’t wait for people to cook from this one!
HAPPY PUB DAY and huge congrats to @davidlebovitz for READY FOR DESSERT! Also, hats off to the styling and baking dream team of @georgedolesefoodstylist and @elisabettheswedishbaker . It was two weeks of amazing sweets, countless jambons beurres, and one persistent (cake-loving) crow. Life’s short, so… you know what to do. 🍨🥧🍰🍪
Happy Pub Day to @chefmelissaking for COOK LIKE A KING! Such a fun (and intense) shoot with Melissa and the dream team @mrsmochi@paigeearnett and @glennjenkins . Everything was as beautiful as it was delicious. You’re gonna want this one!

🌽🍯🍞 Masa-Honey Toasting Bread 🍞🍯🌽 “This aromatic bread is made with a combination of bread flour and masa harina, which gives it a wonderful corn-y flavor. The thin, crispy crust yields to a moist, tender crumb, and, as the name suggests, it’s especially good toasted,” write this week’s guests, Martin Philip & Jessica Battilana.

I was traveling for work last week, and while changing planes at JFK, a friend called to let me know that Charles had passed. I just couldn’t believe it. The following week was filled with posts and remembrances that included this photo. It’s been humbling, and my heart goes out to his family and the community that he built.
When we shot The Slanted Door cookbook, Charles was showing me his home kitchen, where he thought we might want to shoot. As he was showing me the rest of his home, I noticed that his bedroom had a wall of north-facing windows, and I asked if it would be possible to shoot in there. He raised an eyebrow and said, “You wanna shoot the food in the bedroom?” He thought for a moment. “Sure. Why not!” So, other than a few dishes at restaurant, that book was shot at the foot of his bed.
One day he was showing me his first book, Vietnamese Home Cooking, and mentioned that he wanted to call it The Wooden Fish, after a Vietnamese allegory about determination and perseverance. He gave me a copy, and asked if we could do a selfie, which resulted in a Civil War style snapshot that he taped inside the book for me. When it came time for his author portrait, I asked if there was anything he’d like to include - something personal, a favorite tool, whatever. “No… just a cup of coffee… and a whiskey.” It made perfect sense.
You made everything look easy, even when you were quick to admit there wasn’t anything easy about it. You inspired so many, and continue to do so. I feel lucky to have known you.
